Have I been scammed?

Have I been scammed?

I have had difficulty setting up my extender and searched for help using Netgear in my search. I clicked on newextendersetup.net and accessed the help. A technician called me back who was based in the US and accessed my PC. She tried many times to get it to connect and even got me to put a pin in the reset of the box. I could see all of the tests that she was running. She then showed me the results that were coming up after she had asked me how many devices we would usually have connected - I said around 6. She was surprised to see that there were 12 and told me that these were all Chinese companies who had accessed my network and could steal information. She said the only way to get rid of these was to install some software that normal providers cannot match. She then said that she could put this on my PC for me. She then produced a notepad where she had typed what the cost would be - 3 years £300 5 years £500  and lifetime £600. At this stage I felt uncomfortable and asked her to give me a minute and ring me back. I cut the link that she had to the computer. She did call me back and I told her that I was not comfortable. I asked her to confirm again that she worked for netgear and she said that she did. I asked her where the head office is and she said all over the US. She said that if this was not reputable she could have already done something illegal as she had had access to my PC and told me to call back if I change my mind.

I am now really concerned that I have unwittingly opened up my network to scammers or something sinister.

Has anyone had this experience and could anyone put my mind at ease please?

I am also still have issues setting up the box - I now have the steady green WPS light but the router and device lights are not showing. They did for a while and I thought I had mastered it.

Hope someone can help with me please.

Hello, MAzaDoc

I apologize for the late response due to the backlog tickets from our system. Do you still require some assistance regarding your query?

NETGEAR would not ask you to pay for support if we were the ones who contacted you.
