Intermittent loss of internet - EX8000

I've been trying to run an EX8000 in extender mode with Firmware Version: V1.0.1.238 with a dell laptop (Windows 10) and iPhone SE and I keep having the same issue that the router intermittently completely loses internet connection. The signal strength is good but I go from having ~100Mbps to a lost connection. Restarting the router solves the issue until the next time. 

I've reset to factory defaults but the problem recurs. I'm not super technical so I'm wondering if there's an underlying fault or something I can do to get a robust performance

what actual router is the EX8000 connected to? 

What firmware is on the router? 

What method of setup did you use for the EX8000? WPS, the app, installation assistant?

Current setup: CM2000-> RBKE963B-> Trendnet TEG-S380-> GS716T-> pi-hole
also in AP setup: RAXE500->EAX80
1.4gig download/50mbps upload from Xfinity

It's connected to a proprietary Virgin Hub 3.0. (Googling it says its built by Arris and is known as the TG2492LG-VM)

The firmware is  V1.0.1.238

I used the setup wizard.
