Netgear 6100 Extender

My PC is situated in my study whilst my TalkTalk router is in my front room some 30 feet away. I am not very technically minded but as I had connection problems with my PC I decided to try a 6100 Extender. It is in a socket in the hall between my front room and my study. Initial set up was easy and I was soon connected up and delighted as the number of bars shown on my connection had gone from two to five! I also have a streaming hi fi in my study so I connected this to my extender as well, but whilst in the past it would lose connection on the odd occasion, connected to the Extender it lost connection every ten to fifteen minutes. I solved this problem by reconnecting the hi fi back directly to the router and it now works fine again.

This morning the PC said there was no internet connection but as the hi fi was playing internet radio I assumed something was wrong with the extender. I tried connecting the PC directly to the router but it still said the was no internet connection, I checked my tablet and phone which are connected to the router and they were both fine. I had to turn off the extender and reboot the router and on switching the PC back on it reconnected to the internet via the extender. The other kit happily reconnected to the router.

I have never had this problem with my PC and do not understand why it would not connect. Also why does my internet radio not connect via the extender. The latter is not an issue as the reception is pretty good most of the time. I have however read others saying the Extender loses wi fi connection and I am wondering if this is a problem with these. I wonder if I should have purchased powerline adapters instead. If so will these work with extension sockets?

Re: Netgear 6100 Extender

Hi CornishDave,

There are two ways to update your EX6100.

Either automatically by clicking "check for update" on the settings page

or by manually downloading the file from the link provided above, then uploading it on the settings page.

The download is a .zip file, which you can open with a program like WinRAR. Inside is a .chk file, you would upload this file in your settings page.

See page 40 of 48 for instructions:

Re: Netgear 6100 Extender

Hi CornishDave,

http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/20233/~/product-faq%3A-powerline-adapters

No. NETGEAR does not recommend using power strips, surge protectors, UPS and extension cords with Powerline products.  These devices filter out some or all of the high frequency signals used in Powerline communications. Connecting a Powerline to one of these devices can greatly reduce the data rate of transfers, or block communications entirely.

It's possible that your WiFi network is experiencing interference from neighboring networks. You can change your WiFi channel by following:

Also connect to your EX6100 and login to mywifiext.net and check if your EX6100 is running the latest firmware version 1.0.1.36

Re: Netgear 6100 Extender

Thank you, it is working at present, the answer for some reason seems to be switch on the PC before the internet radio. For the moment I will let sleeping dogs lie but I will retain your advice. I did check the firmware update and downloaded this but I cannot open it. Presumably whatever I need is not on my PC, what do you usually use to open this update?
