I get that the extender does that. What I'd like for you to test is your phone speeds going to the router in the location that the extender is in.

When my phone is next to the extender it’s speed is maximum (as in full bars on WiFi)

Use the speedtest app/program for both devices. Also make sure you're on the 2.4ghz if you're speed testing. You can't compare 2.4ghz speed to 5ghz speed.
