WN3000RP install challenges

Trying to install extended to c3000 Netgear router. Can’t get it to work. I can connect client to extender no problem. I can connect extender to router no problem. Just can’t do both at the same time. Support has been on the phone with me for 2 hours with no luck. What could be wrong ?

Re: WN3000RP install challenges

Are you wanting to set it up in AP mode or extender mode?

Have you tried setting it up without using WPS?

Re: WN3000RP install challenges

Does it work over ethernet after you complete the setup?  Or does that fail also?

Is this a new purchase?

Re: WN3000RP install challenges

Not sure i understand your question. I was never able to get the extender work as an extender. If i connected the client side i couldn’t get to the router. If i connected the router side i couldn’t get to the client. Therefore i don’t understand your question about connecting to the Ethernet.

Re: WN3000RP install challenges

When you set up the WN3000RP as an extender, you can connect devices to it using either the extender WiFi network or by connecting them to the ethernet port of the extender.  In both cases, the connection is relayed to the router using the WN3000RP radio.

You are saying that you cannot connect to the extender WiFi when the WN3000RP is connected to the router network.  I'm asking if you can connect to the extender via ethernet (and reach the internet) when the extender is in that state.  This could help isolate the problem.

I am also wondering if you mean that you can connect to the extender wifi, but can't reach the internet.  Or if you mean that you cannot join the extender wifi network.

Re: WN3000RP install challenges

Ah. I get your question. I never tried connecting devices via Ethernet

What i mean about connecting to the extenderis connecting to the extender WiFi. The green light is on the client side. I can see the extender through the il address and admin software i just can’t get to the router and internet.

Re: WN3000RP install challenges

Ok.  So you are joining the client wifi network.

Have you tried going to www.mywifiext.net from there?  That should show you the status of the router connection (and you should be able to reconnect to the router network).

Are you using a different network name for the extender network?

Re: WN3000RP install challenges

I tried going to the wifiext route with no success. Haven’t connected to the extender WiFi when i go to connect to the router via the wifiext genie i see the router SSID, i See the extender_ext SSID but when i hit continue to connect to both i get the get connect to your network error message which then takes me back to the Netgear login page. It looks like some setting is preventing the connection it really aren’t that many settings to adjust.

I am bit confused on what you are saying here.  Normally you connect to the extender wifi right after you reset the extender, and then go to www.mywifiext.net in your browser to complete the setup.  Are you doing something different?

Re: WN3000RP install challenges

Sorry if i confused you. The manual says connect to the router then connect the client. The Netgear help desk says connect the client to the extender WiFi then connect to the router. I have tried both.

I was trying to explain the steps i take after connecting the client to the WiFi extender. The steps as best i remembered them is you log on to the extender. Then you go to WiFi ext and look for the router SSID and connect. It’s asks you if you want to keep the same password as the router and i do. When i hit continue it says it can’t conn to my home network. Make sense?

Re: WN3000RP install challenges

Well, the steps I suggest are

  1. reset the extender and don't press WPS
  2. join the extender wifi network NETGEAR_EXT
  3. browse to www.mywifiext.net, and start the smart wizard
  4. select the router network, and enter the password
  5. enter your extender network name, and it's password.

You could try setting the security and password manually in step 5, since setting the checkbox doesn't seem to be working for you.

The extender and the router should both be using WPA2-PSK security.  If your network names include spaces or unusual characters, consider renaming them.  That also applies to the network passwords.

Re: WN3000RP install challenges

Ok thanks.

I have reset the extender many times - soft reset and hard reset.

And have followed the steps below including entering the password manually. I have also tried no security in both the extender and the router. None of these steps have worked. Help desk also had me change the channel on the router to channel 1. ACL on the router is already off so it wasn’t that either.

My plan at this point is return the extender and go to a WiFi mesh setup. Netgear has one and Linksys has one. They seem to be roughly equivalent albeit much more than a $40 extender. That said i have spent more time trying to get this to work than anyone should have to.

Thank you for all of your time as well. Really appreciate it.
