Which product do I get ?
A friend is having WIFI reception problems. What I want to do is run an Ethernet connection from his router to the other side of his house. From there I plug the magic Netgear product into the the Ethernet connection, and give him a full strength signal where he needs it. I don't want a repeater. I want the source of his wifi signal to be the Ethernet connection.
What do you call such a thing?

A wireless extender in access point mode sounds about right.

Re: Which product do I get ?
In terms of what you get, just make sure you get one that supports AP mode. The base models/cheaper ones don't. In terms of performance, you have several options. You can get a wireless extender in ap mode or you can get a wireless router that supports AP mode. Just depends on what you want.
Take the speeds/specs you want and both the router and wireless extender pages have check boxes you can mark off to filter it down.
