Wifi Extender N300 Question

Do I need to connect to my extender to reap the benefits? Because I can't connect to it with my computer even if I try. I would guess the answer is yes but I've spent an hour and a half try to figure this out and would rather at this point a person with more knowledge to help me out.

What extender is it? N300 is a speed not a model.

What router are you connecting it to? 

What firmware is on the extender? 

Are you trying to set it up via wps or using the installation wizard? 

Where is it failing? we need details of whats not working to help since we aren't there to see it.
