Wifi extender giving worse speeds than directly to modem

I hooked up the extender to my wifi network and it is giving me lower speeds than if I ran it directly to my router. I tried different locations and I get the same outcome. I have gig speed wifi and get roughly 200 mps directly to the router with the extender I get 100 mps no matter the location. Also, it is not the extender because I bought the best extender netgear sells.

    Lots of things to try.

    A. EX6120 isn't the fastest extender netgear sells.

    B. What have you setup for your fastlane settings. Extenders have to use their bandwidth to connect back to the router. Depending on how you setup fastlane these are the fastlane options:  1. Router-to-Extender in 2.4 GHz only and Extender-to-Device in 5 GHz only
          2. Router to Extender in 5 GHz only and Extender-to-Device in 2.4 GHz only 3. Normal mode where the 2.4 GHz extends the 2.4 and           5ghz extends the 5ghz.  Their are pro's and cons to each setup.

    C. How close/far away is the extender? Is there anything blocking it? Distances and interference make a big difference in how an extender performs.

    D. Is it hardwired? It has the option of access point mode if you have ethernet options where it is. this will reduce your lag and increase your speeds.

Extenders reduce throughput by their basic design. Its why the Orbi's work so well. They have a dedicated radio for the backhaul. Netgear has wifi extenders with the tri-band option with one of the radios designed for the backhaul. they're better than those without but still not as good as extending via ethernet access point.
