Can't reinstall WNR2000v2 router software with disc.

I want to update the firmware for my out-of-support period WNR2000v2 router. When I disconnect my wifi and run the installation disc, the first thing that happens is a message that there is no working ethernet adapter. When I check my Network & Internet Settings in Windows 10 and click on Network Adapters, I right click on the Ethernet adapter and it says enabled. So, I can't continue to troubleshoot the issues with my ADSL/LAN connection. Need help, please!

Hi @jglende,
You can manually update the firmware of the router. The links below may help out.

Re: Can't reinstall WNR2000v2 router software with disc.
Dexter--thanks for your response. I actually got this far when I first tried to install the new firmware manually: after connecting my ethernet cable directly to my computer, I visit the download page, download it, extract it and then visit the routerlogin site. I get the message that I am not connected to my wireless router. But I don't know how to do that if my ethernet goes directly from the modem to my computer--seems like an impossibility.
That is why I dug out the original installation CD, hoping to log in to the router that way. Then, of course, I got the "ethernet is not enabled" message. What now?

Welcome to what may be the worst error message in the world. For an
explanation, try:
https://community.netgear.com/t5/x/x/m-p/1365830
Briefly, the idea is that "[www.]routerlogin.net" should point to
your own router, but that's true only if you use your own router for DNS
name resolution. Irregardful, you should be able to get to the thing
using its IP address, if you can determine (or guess) that. Perhaps:
"192.168.1.1". You can often get it from your computer's IP
configuration as the default gateway or router address (or some similar
description).

That's only one of the problems with that misleading/unhelpful error
page. But I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for Netgear to improve it.
Try the IP address in a web browser. Forget the obsolete software on
the CD.

Re: Can't reinstall WNR2000v2 router software with disc.
Hi @jglende,
Since you already have the firmware downloaded and extracted, you can disconnect the computer from the modem and reconnect it back to the router then proceed with steps number 2 to 8.

Thanks, DexterJB. I'll update my post as I move further along. The whole point of this effort is to determine what has been knocking my network down every single day.

Thank you antinode. I'll attempt your solution when I understand exactly what you've said; I'm really a novice at networking.

Gave up. Bought a new router.
