Yes the laptop can see all the mapped desktop drives and access files on them.
The desktop when I open the Homegroup tab in explorer says no computers connected to the Homegroup, not even the Desktop. I left the Homegroup on both computers and set up another. Still no good.
When I open the Homgroup tab on the desktop I see all the mapped drives for the Desktop.

I'm convinced that this is a Windows problem. I Googled about "The specified network provider name is invalid" and found a number of links. Here's just one:

In the thread, there appears to be a helpful tip to make sure that the Microsoft Client for Microsoft Networks is installed. You need it in order to access resources on other computers.
You'll want to check on the computer where the error is seen. In your case, I believe this would be your desktop.

Microsoft Client for Microsoft Networkswas not installed on the desktoip for some reason. Installing it and now I can join the workgroup and see the folder icons for the laptop on the desktop in Network on the Desktop. But theyare not shared so the error messaage says when I click on the icon.
Previously the icosn were not there and I was not a memeber of the workgroup.
So on the laptop all sharing is enabled. Yet still cannot see individual foilders or files.

I added Everyone to all the shared drives on both computers and now can see almost all files and folders. I still cannot see the desktop folder in the Network. But if I drill down to the C drive and click on the User aI can then see all the folders but can only acces some of them. Apparently wht is shared in the Homegroup sharing options page.
I believe this is always how it ws before.
