WNR1000v2 Force firmware to router

I have a WNR1000v2 router that was given to me by Comcast and I was always under the impression that it has the normal Netgear firmware on it. I then found out this was not true. It turns out it has firmware: V1.0.0.12NA and is showing as hardware version: WNR1000v2-VC. I found out that the "VC" on the end means it is custom firmware from Comcast. This displeases me a lot. I am having issues with the wireless dropping and router resetting and such. I wanted to put the normal stock firmware on this router instead. I know it is possible to fix bricked routers by forcing it to accept firmware with tftp and was wondering if anyone has any ideas on how I can force it to accept the newest stock Netgear firmware for the WNR1000v2 router. When I try it on the Web GUI it fails and wont accept it.

Oh and BTW, to all those that have this router. Comcast has informed me that the router is no longer theirs. It now belongs to me and that as of 11/28/12 they stopped providing these free routers and I can do with it as I please and they do not offer any type of support.

Re: WNR1000v2 Force firmware to router

ok. I will give it a shot. Funny thing. I think it was you I was talking to before on here and I was telling you how I work for Comcast and the firmware is not modified and upon looking at my router more since I started having problems I can confirm it is custom firmware. they removed some things in this firmware. I was surprised.

So... it was successful in downgrading to a Netgear version of firmware?

There is new firmware for that router:

Added support for IPv6.
Fixed a number of IPv6 related compatibility issues.
Support various HNAP commands to work with iControl solution.
Support for HNAP calls to change region and wi-Fi settings through iControl solution.
Fixed a number of GUI bugs.
Installation Instructions:

Download the file to a convenient place such as your desktop.

Note: Do not upgrade the firmware using a wireless connection. Please perform firmware upgrade with “wired” or Ethernet connection only.

Open a Web browser.
Access the router (http://192.168.1.1 or the Default Gateway address if the router's default IP was changed).
Log in the router (User Name = admin and Password = password, unless you changed it).
Write down all settings that you entered when previously configuring. This includes information such as ISP configuration and wireless security settings.
Under Maintenance, click Router Upgrade.
Click Browse and locate the firmware upgrade file.
Click Upload.
Wait for the router to reboot.
Under Maintenance, click Settings Backup, then click Erase. (Or press the reset button on the back for 10 seconds.)
Wait one minute for the router to reboot.
Manually enter the configuration information you wrote down in Step 5.
