ReadyNAS NV - Fan 1 has failed
Hello, I have an old ReadyNAS NV that has been loyal for years. I replaced the power supply under the recall a number of years back and other than that, it's never given me any trouble. The drives have been upgraded from 250x4 to 500x4 to the current 1000x4. The current drives are WD Red. Every year or so, I take the NV and another NV+ v1 that I have and blow all of the dust out of them. I did that about a week ago and now on the NV, I have started getting "fan 1 has failed" messages in the log. My first thought/hope was that it actually was the fan so I replaced it with a new fan of the exact same model. It ran OK for 4 days and then the fan stopped and the NV logged the "fan 1 has failed" message again. I have verified that when it fails, the fan does actually stop spinning. It stays that way for about 15-30 seconds and then spins back up to normal. While it is stopped, the health tab shows Fan 1 at 0 RPM and status as "out of spec". After it spins back up, everything goes back to normal (Status = OK). I installed the Fan RPM override Option Add-on a number of years ago so I thought I would give that a try. I set the fan minimum to 2000 RPM and rebooted the NV. It ran for a couple of hours and then the "fan 1 has failed" message logged again. So, I have one last option I can think of but wanted to run it by the group to get some other opinions. I pourchased a spare NV power supply years ago when they were selling for around $50. I still have it...never used...never even opened. What are the chances that a portion of the existing power supply is having issues causing the fan to stop spinning? It's my understanding that on the 3-wire fans, the speed is regulated through voltage variance so it seems possible but like I said, I want to get other thoughts before tearing it apart.
