ReadyCLOUD - ability to choose share/target folder
I'm sure this is a request that has been made before, but I thought it might help if I added my voice to it. Hopefully this issue will get bumped higher on the priority list. I would like to be able to specify which folder I backup from and where I backup to, as opposed to being limited to folders in the 'Users' sub-directory and having folders created automatically on the 'data' volume. That goes for the ReadyCLOUD PC app, as well as the Android app. On the Android app you can only backup photos that you take with your camera. What about shared pictures? I must admit that I'm baffled as to why such a simple feature has been neglected. It seems like it should be on a list of 101 features you want when backing up data. While I have this thread going - another issue I have is that the snapshot folder is included when new snapshots are made. I like the feature, but making a snapshot of a snapshot is redundant. When there are multiple snapshots it's like having two mirrors facing each other - you have a snapshot, of a snapshot, of a snapshot, of a snapshot, of a snapshot... And I'm not entirely sure why Netgear has even bothered with snapshots - at the moment my backups are not performing a sync, i.e. all files are copied to the NAS and if you delete a file on your PC it is not deleted on the NAS. So all copies of all files are stored on the NAS. Isn't that the idea of a snapshot - so you can delete or modify files and then retrieve an earlier version later if you need to? If the NAS stores all the files anyway, then you don't need a snapshot as all the files are there. I will bring this issue up in the support section - maybe it's just my ReadyCLOUD that doesn't work.4KViews1like1Comment
Req: ReadyCloud backup - specify source & target subdirs
I've just installed OS6 on my Ultra 4, running fine :). One of the features I was looking forward to use was the ReadyCloud backup, but it's quite disappointing though. I miss some features that seem basic. Custom source folder When choosing the source folder on a desktop (by clicking on the ReadyCloud tray icon, then "backup PC folder") I'm limited to the contents/subdirectories of c:\users\< user>\ Why? There are MANY cases where you'd like to backup only a subdir of one of those directories. Or of a folder that's not located in the userdir at all. Examples: c:\users\myaccount\My documents\crucialdox or d:\mydata More logical & secure destination folder There seem no options to change the destination folder of the backup. By default it's added to the list of available shares. This has several disadvantages: it's public!?! /data/backuptarget is owned by guest on 777?!? I just don't get it. First you limit the folders that can be chosen to a userdir at the user end, end then you publish the backup publicly at 777? So far for privacy; very hard to explain to people. it's crowding the list of available shares. Too what end? It's just a backup, only needed in case of emergency. No need for such a prominent location. It makes the "regular" locations that people have to access more often less obvious to find. And that's from a user perspective. Imagine the list an admin faces. I expected a location similar to the users snapshots. A logical place could be /home/< username>/backups or something (obviously at 700), with a subfolder for every folder that has been configured by the user to backup. Final questions Could you PLEASE implement those requests in a future version? Can you think of a work around (editing configuration files) to achieve the desired result? Will probably involve client and nas-sided changes. PS: to be complete: fortunately the ReadyCloud mobile app does allow a custom folder to be set for picture backups. Local UI and ReadyCloud UI permission setting needs aligning
Running OS 6.1.2 on the 102 model. When setting up a local user in ReadyNas (local access) you can set the "Folder" and "File" permissions. When doing the same in ReadyCloud you can only set the "Folder" permissions. The way you can see this is by looking at the "Folder" and "File" settings for a share via ReadyNas local access, the tick-boxes for the ReadyCloud users will be ticked/unticked depending on what you set via the ReadyCloud UI, but only on the "Folder" tab, the "File" tab is always blank. Currently it is not possible to tick/untick permissions for ReadyCloud users via ReadyNas local access. Depending on use of ReadyNas I understand the reason for being able to set up users both in the ReadyNas directly and in ReadyCloud, but I do not understand why the settings are not aligned in terms of permission configuration detail and ability to change ReadyCloud permissions locally with the admin account. Also, it seems that if you set restrictions locally, i.e. "Folder"/"File" not read/write available to "everyone", then it does not matter what you set the ReadyCloud permissions to, as the local permissions take precedence - coupled with the fact that you cannot give "File" permissions to ReadyCloud users you now have an access limitation in my mind.3.8KViews1like0Comments
