Non-warranty repair
1 TopicOut of warranty hardware repair?
A friend brought me his RN516 (purchased on my recommendation) that is non-functional. The long shaggy dog story is that a few months ago his dog (or, so he claims) knocked over the shelves on which the NAS was kept (and was running at the time). It worked fine for a while, but then recently quit. While the problem may be unrelated to the fall, the signs of the fall are quite apparent and I am sure Netgear would deny warranty repair based on it. Given that and the fact that the problem sounded like a power supply issue, I took a look at it. Nope, not the supply. There is a dead short on the motherboard 12V CPU input, which is causing the supply to not power up. Before I go any farther (there are two big electrolytic caps across that input, one of which could have shorted, and impact could have accelerated that), we want to know if Netgear offers out-of-waranty service on the RN516, especially now that it's out of production. He didn't seem to have much luck with phone support, who just wanted the serial number and purchase infomation then said it was in warranty and wanted to do an RMA. I haven't tried calling because it's registered to him. So, is there a way to find out if it can be repaired and at what cost other than by sending it in and having them contact him that it's not covered because of physical damage? If the cost will be too high, he's prepared to by another NAS (though maybe not Netgear).2.5KViews0likes0Comments
