3 TopicsDual RR4312X replacement for Multiple desktop NAS models - best RAID Level /Hard drives to use?
we own multiple desktop readynas boxes of different drive sizes (see photo) and are looking to consolidate into 2 new RR4312X models that will be located in 2 different offices with the idea of Nightly replication/Rsync (data identical -users access their local NAS) Currently the NAS support 40TB each (about 27TB used 12TB Free) Raid-6 on 8 bay 528X/628X with 2 EDA500 (different volume) for a total of 12 bays each.. For the new 4312X We are debating if we should just continue using RAID6 with the nightly replication or if Raid50/60 would be a better choice for performance given the nightly replication between NAS boxes (Raid10 takes away too much capacity) The other issue some of the hard drives are older (anything under 4TB has a few ATA errors & only shows a few timeouts during rebuilds) We are also trying to figure out the best way to expand the capicity of both of the new NAS servers to the same storage space (taking into account the HD's we already own) for example would it be better buying more lower cost 6/8TB given our current configuration - instead of fewer 12TB etc. thanks592Views0likes1CommentWhich unit to buy RN628X vs RN528X & RR4312X ?
Trying to decide between these 3 models ... does the RN528x have enough CPU /ram power for 4K Transcoding & PLEX Server? as it seems to have less RAM/CPU whereas the RR4312X /RN628X both have similar Xeon (the 628x being faster on some benchmarks) - can we manually update the RAM on the new models? if we purchased 2 RN528X that would give us 16 drive bays at cheaper price then the RN4312X with only 12 bays "most bang for the buck" what is the purpose of the RN628X having 2 1GB & 2 10GB ports ? is this a design flaw ? - if you bond the 2x10GB ports together using LACP 802.3AD for 20GB - why have any 1GB ports on the unit ? can they also be used at the same time? (the RN528X has only 2 10GB ports that act as either 1GB or 10GB - which makes more sense) can the EDA500 be used with the new RNx28 models? unforutnately size/height is an issue (the EDA500 doesn't match height of the previous generation RN516 which causes an issue because we places the switches ontop of the NAS devices ( is there a replacement EDA700 in the works with the same silver color/height? Lastly - comparing the RN716X to the RN628X/RR4312X - am I correct to say the discontinued 716 has a Faster CPU/greater throughput (at a higher price point) then the new RN628X or am I missing something...SolvedBest Way to Consolidate 4 NAS Servers down to 2 new NAS devices without buying new HD's
We currently have 4 Older ReadyNAS boxes (NV,NV+ Business Pro, RN716X with drives from 750GB up to 10TB - Larger drives in bigger NAS devices) we woulld like to consolidate down to 2 new units.. (RN628X, RN528X )without purchasing any new HDD - Would the best way to do this.. Pull one HD (the largest) from each of the older NAS (so it breaks the redundancy but still access data RAID5/XRAID2) populate the 628X with initally 10TB, 10TB 8TB 6TB Get the data off the RN716X onto new /other NAS devices by manually copying via mapped drives.. (or drag/dropfrom one NAS to the other via Windows Desktop) then install the rest of the largest drives into the 628x... from the 716x - then so in the end it looks like RN628X 10TB 10, 8, 6,6,6 4, 4 RN528X 4TB, 4, 4 3, 3, 2, 1.5, 750GB so when the 750GB drive fails in the future.. move the 4TB down from the 628 into the 528, & buy a new 10TB to install into the 628 - the 528 is currently in the same physical location & will backup the "most important data from the 628x " but the 528 will eventually be moved offsite.. - we would also like to take the "most critical data" sync with an online backup like MS Azure, AWS, Crashplan - is that possible? or is the only supported ReadyCloud..? Ideally we would like to install some client software on each Win10 PC to automatically backup to readynas unique folder -rather then specify "new backup job" on the NAS GUI - any suggestions on client software? crashplan couldn't do "mapped drives" I'm just wondering if this is the best approach as we don't have budget for all 10TB drives and if Raid5/XRAID2 is the best - as we have never had 2 HDD Fail in a NAS at the same time, and are usually very quick at replacing any failed HDD..
