8 TopicsGuest network password--nothing works
Hi Netgear! I'm trying to enable my guest network. Nothing I enter into the password field is accepted as a password and I get the message telling me about the "8 to 63 ASCII or 64 hex digits." The latter I assume is WRONG, as it is asking for 64-bit number _represented_ in base 16 (which makes it 64 bits / 4 bits-per-hex digit = 16 hex digits). Aaaaaaanyway, so, nothing I enter is accepted: "a" -- No. "a123b123" -- No. "t1234567" -- No. "Test1234" -- No, and I've attached a picture of this. 64-bit number in base 16 --No. So, my question is, what is one supposed to put in the field for a guest network password? See the attached picture--I get this "error message" for any string I put into the password field. Modem firmware, V1.0.9.18_1.2.27.Solved6.4KViews0likes3CommentsVLAN Tagging for Guest Network
I've seen a couple of posts about this in the past on this forum, but all of them appear to be kinda old, and before you could uncheck the "Allow Guests to see each other and access my local network" while in AP mode. Now it looks like you can uncheck that in the version of firmware that I have (1.11.0.20). I have my own router/DHCP/firewall/gateway that I want to keep using, so I have put my Orbi network into AP only mode. However, I would still like to have a guest network that I'm able to separate at my router. I would like to do this via VLAN tagging. So my questions are: Is this something that Orbi is capable of now? If not, is this something that will be available in the future? And if so, is there a way to be notified when it is available? What actually happens when you uncheck "Allow Guests to see each other and access my local network" while in AP only mode? Does the Orbi just start NAT'ing and serving it's own DHCP at that point? Lastly, assuming that it's not already a thing, I would like to chime in with others here and say that I would REALLY like to see VLAN tagging as an option in the advanced interface.Device can't connect to main network but can to guest network?
Recently changed my router from an Apple Airport over to Netgear Orbi. Overall I'm loving the wifi speed all over my house, but one thing is driving me crazy... I have three Belkin WeMo switches - two are connected to the main (as in, not guest) network just fine so I can control them from my phone, but one absolutely will not connect to the main network, but will happily and reliably connect to the Orbi guest network. This is a pain because the WeMo app will only allow remote control of the devices on the same wifi network. I would be raising this issue over on the WeMo forums if it wasn't for the fact that it connects without any issue whatsoever to the guest network (confirmed by seeing its MAC address in the device list inside the Orbi admin interface). I have tried everything I can think of to get it working, including... Making sure the Orbi firmware and WeMo firmware are all up to date (they are, all 3 WeMo switches running the same firmware) Making sure I factory reset the WeMo properly Trying to connect to the two identical versions of my main network that show up in the list in the WeMo app during setup (I guess it is seeing the main Orbi unit and satellite separately, I had a similar issue with two cheap IP cameras but gave up on getting those working!) - I wondered if the satellite only broadcast in 5GHz or something, which the WeMo doesn't support Trying to figure out if the device is somehow blocked on my Orbi setup for some crazy reason (I didn't have much luck with that - the Orbi admin interface showing my devices seems very buggy as mentioned in other posts - some wireless devices show as wired, some supposedly 'blocked' devices are actually connected fine - it seems something to do with how you name devices and the web interface not correctly parsing HTML characters) I am at a loss - I guess I could buy a replacement WeMo and see if that does the trick, but the fact that I can see the damn thing on my guest network (and tested at a separate household and worked fine) makes me blame the Orbi. It also worked just fine on my Airport network. Can anybody think of anything else I haven't tried? Thank you fine community :)7.6KViews0likes5CommentsOrbi : Captive Portal for Guest / Customer Internet access
Hi, The Orbi hardware is great for what we want to use it for in our charity. For many reasons we don't have network cabling between three separate buildings so wireless backhaul is our only option. We want to offer free wifi in our cafe. I note that the Orbi has a guest option BUT... we need the customer to agree to terms and conditions on a captive portal webpage before they get their free wifi. As far as I can see, the Orbi doesn't have a built in option to edit a captive portal page in it's firmware, so any recommendations how a captive portal could be used? Many thanks BSGGuest isolation in AP mode works on latest firmware...almost (tl;dr IPv4 is OK, IPv6 not so much)
The good: Things work like you'd expect - you can reach the Internet but nothing on the local network except DHCP and DNS. The bad: If your network has IPv6, it completely bypasses isolation. Netgear, thank you for putting the effort in to get this right for IPv4, but please don't forget it's increasingly an IPv6 world out there. Please add proper isolation for IPv6 in the same manner you already are for IPv4. Rodneywndr3700v3 guest network allows access to my private network
I have a netgear N600 WNDR3700v3 updated to the latest firmware update. I have connected the WAN to my home network and set it to obtain an IP automatically. So my home network is 192.168.1.x and so the router nicely picks up 192.168.1.23 and I have set the DHCP server to make the LAN side of the router 10.0.0.x and that is working nicely so when I connect wirelessly or wired to the WAN, it picks up something like 10.0.0.101. I have enabled a wireless network, call it NETWORKA and NETWORKG and that works fine. I also created a guest network call it GUESTA and GUESTB. I thought that this would prevent guests from seeing my home network. Alas this is not so. While logged onto the guest network from my laptop with a wireless connection I get an IP of 10.0.101, but I can both ping my desktop computer at 192.168.1.12 and if I map a network drive from the laptop using \\192.168.1.12\temp it connects. Seems to me like guest neworking is not giving me the isolation that I need from the guests I give the guest network password to. Do I misunderstand? Shouldn't a guest network isolate the guest from my internal home network? Am I missing something? Looking forward to help on this issues.SolvedNighthawk R7000 Geust Network IP Addressing
We are using this router with static addressing. We are considering using the guest network, but the guest side would need to use dynamic addressing while maintaining static addressing on the other side. Also, we would like to limit the number of users logged in to the guest network. I am not really clear on how to accomplish this and am asking for advice.Solved3.2KViews0likes1CommentWNDR4500v2: Wireless isolation doesn't work on guest network
Hi, I have used this Router now for about 9 months and have been very happy with its performance. We have a home business and students regularly visit our home. We have recently had requests for them to get on our WiFi (because cell reception is bad), and I wanted to use the "Guest Network" feature to accomplish this. Goals: --Guest network is for student needing to access the internet only. --Guest network will broadcast SSID and will be guarded with password, given to student at their request. --Multiple clients on guest network should not be able to see each other. Just client and the internet.....that's it. --Guests must be absolutely isolated from our regular WIRED network (plugged into the physical ports on the WNDR4500v2) and the regular WIRELESS network (via the WiFi on the WNDR4500v2). Assets on these internal networks (WIRED & WIRELESS) are lightly guarded and thus outside individuals must not be allowed to traverse these networks. CONFIGURATION: Router Model: WNDR4500v2 Firmware: V1.0.0.60_1.0.38 SETUP: -Regular Wifi "WIRELESS" is ON: "Enable Wireless Isolation" checkbox is OFF. -Guest WiFi "GUEST" is ON: "Enable Wireless Isolation" checkbox is ON. "Allow guest to access My Local Network" checkbox is OFF. -DHCP is ON -"Enable AP Mode" checkbox is OFF. Everything above seemed quite straightforward for easy configuration. However, it was a different story when I actually tested it. I used my iPad to get on the guest network. I used the application called "Fing" that does an IP address scan on the entire network. Once identifying an asset, you can then run a more detailed scan by attempting to access various services on various ports of the device. Immeidately, the guest network showed every device on my GUEST, WIRED, and WIRELESS networks (combination of fixed and DHCP addresses). Not good! I then ran a more detailed analysis of the devices found all standard open ports (smb shares, webserver, terminal services) cound indeed be accessed from the guest network. Is this a firmware bug? How do I deny guests access to everything but their connection to the internet? By the way, the "Help" on the router configuration screen appears to describe the checkbox functionality BACKWARDS of the description. (I tried it both ways, just in case, but to no avail.) Probably a previous version or person-who-did-interface didn't talk to person-who-did-help? "Allow guests to see each other and access my local network When unchecked, users connecting to this guest network can only access the Internet and cannot access any other devices in the same network or in other networks, including the main network and the wired network. In addition, all the clients in this guest network cannot access router's management GUI or any other services provided by the router (for example, ReadySHARE Storage, ReadySHARE Printer... if the router supports these functions). When checked, users connecting to this guest network can access not only the Internet but also all devices on all local networks, including the main network and the wired network." Thanks!Solved9.8KViews0likes14Comments
