Hi, I recently had a double disk failure in my RNPro6 hence it died. - Fortunately I had a backup of everything AND a spare RNPRO 6. Now i have fixed the dead RNPRO6 I want to create a volume on it and set it as the secondary/Backup for the now Primary - Running RNPRO. It looks like i have to register it before i can do this however I cannot get to the registration page, its a dead link from the nas and going there via this portal doesnt show me anything other than my support has ended for this device - i know. any help here please? need to get this back up and running so it can take backups from the running one. thanks Kevin839Views0likes1CommentReadyNAS 4312 (or similar) - RAID config and expansion
Hi, I need help with a decision. We'd like 20TB of storage for both iSCSI LUN HyperV VHD virtualisation and general SMB3 data (with snapshots). One volume. The 12 bay RR4312S is a model we are familar with. We'd like the space to be easily upgradable in the future - cost is a consideration right now or we'd use bigger disks right away. We want to use RAID10. Is RAID10 an XRAID option? Whenever I've tried on the online calculator XRAID RAID 6 is chosen each time. So, if RAID10 isn't an XRAID option what do I do? Which is the best suggestion for populating it now with an eye on the future (4 years hence) in terms of expanding Flex Raid. Is Vertical less hassle than Horizontal? Therefore should we fill all 12 bays now then add bigger disks one by one in the future - i.e. vertically? Or do we leave chassis space for a horizontal expansion? Hi, I have a new ReadyNAS 4312 (rack) with 14TB avaialble storage. A Windows Server 2016 Standard Hyper-V host 10GB connectivity between them. What are safe iSCSI LUN and VHDX levels that I can be OK with. I propose to build a Fileserver on the HOST with its System & Data VHDX files actually stored on a ISCSI LUN on the NAS using Micrososoft's iSCSI initiator. Would a single 12TB LUN with say a 70GB VHDX (O/S) and a 10TB VHDX (data) be 'safe' Or maybe a a smaller VHDX for data would be safer. I don't want to oversize the LUN or VHDX for fear of corruption. All suggestions welcome. Andy.1.1KViews0likes0CommentsRN3220 / RN4200 Crippling iSCSI Write Performance
I've got a mixed OEM ecosystem with several Tier 2 RN3220's and RN4200's along with Tier 1 EqualLogic storage appliances. All ReadyNAS appliances have 12 drive compliments Seagate Enterprise 4TB drives in them. I wanted to be able to use the ReadyNAS' as iSCSI options, particuarly for maintainance cycles on the storage network, so I re-purposed them from NFS use. Factory reset them onto 6.6 firmware and they have subsequently been upgraded to 6.7.1 with no change in symptoms. The drives have no errors It's a new install, so there are no fragmentation issues etc. The NAS's use X-RAID I've set them up with 2 NIC 1GbE MPIO from the Hyper-V side (I've also tried it on 10GbE and on 1 NIC 1GbE with no impact). 9k jumbo frames are on There are no teams on the RN's Checksum is off Quota is off iSCSI Target LUN's are all thick Write caching is on (UPS's are in place) Sync writes are disabled As many services as I can find are off, there are no SMB shares No NetGear apps or cloud services No snapshots The short summary of the problem is that if I migrate a VM VHDX storage from the EqualLogic on to any of the ReadyNAS appliances, accross the same storage network and running from the same hypervisor, the data migration takes an eternity and once the move completes the write performance is uterrly, utterly crippled. Here are the ATTO stats: Same VM, on the same 1GbE network. In the case of the above over 1x 1GbE, single path, all running on the same switches. Moving the VM back to the EqualLogic storage takes a fraction of the time to move and the performance of the VM is instantly restored. According to the ATTO data above the ReadyNAS should be offering better performance than the substantially more expensive EqualLogic, however in this condition these units are next to useless. If I create an SMB share and perform a file copy of the storage network, I can get 113MB/s off of a file copy on a 1x1GbE NIC, with no problems. So it does not look like a network issue. Does anyone have any ideas? I have one of the 3220's in a state that I can do anything to. The only thing that I haven't done is try Flex-RAID instead of X-RAID, but these numbers do not look like a RAID parity calculation issue. We are currently experiencing service interuptions when the disk scrubbing task runs. The unit is configured with 12 4TB disks. It is running v6.8.1 firmware. We have also added ram to bring the total to 20gb. While there has been some discussion as to whether additional ram is necessary the answer is an unqualified yes. The original 4gb was insufficient as with that amount of RAM our virtual environment was showing that the virtual machines were paused due to a loss of storage domain connectivity. From a pure standpoint 4GB is sufficient if it is only file services being provided (NFS, SMB, FTP) once the process overhead of RSYNC, File Search and antivirus are added along with the overhead of the various housekeeping utilities, memory swapping to disk increased to the point of becoming exessive. The addition of RAM eliminated the swapping overhead and consequently the virtual machines connection to the storage domain was stabilized to provide 100% availability and the pausing issue was solved. The question at this point is how do we set process priority so that the file sharing processes are of a higher priority than the houskeeping processes (disk scrubbing, defragmentation and disk balancing). Defragmentation (also a memory intensive process) and disk balancing do not interfere with file sharing but disk scrubbing interferes with connectivity to the storage domain. The 4220 is connected via 10gb/s link to a 10gb/s switch. The virtual host machines are each connecte to the switch with 3 bonded 1gb/s ethernet links. We have already ascertained that it is the disk scrubbing which is interferring with file services as when it is removed from the schedule the problem goes away and the problem only occurs when the disk scrubbing process is running. The connection for the storage domain is via NFS720Views0likes1CommentNAS RAID 1 performance and free space percentage
Hi, We have a RR4312x0 using Flex raid. Two of the disks are RAID 1. The logs report that they are below 20% free and therefore performacnce will degrade. What is the safe percentage level? This RAID 1 volume is home to an iSCSI LUN so I was hoping to use its entire capacity for the LUN. If I need to reduce the LUN size then so be it but I'd love to know how much space of a 2TB volume I can give to it. Also, can I tie an iSCSI LUN/group to access from only 2 calling IP addresses? We have a WIndows Hyper V HOST that is direct connected via the SFP+ ports. This windows iSCSI initiator HOST is also on the same LAN as the 1Gb LAN ports that the business devices connected to the NAS SMB shares via. I need to stop this as it could potentially slow the link down. The iSCSI LUN holds Virtual server VHDs so speed is crucial. Cheers Andy Thanks, Andy.2.3KViews0likes0CommentsReadyNAS4312 HyperV VHD over iSCSI or SMB? RR4312
Hello. We have a new ReadyNAS RR4312. It has 10*2TB SATAs. It will be used to hold the VHDX files from a Windows Server 2016 HOST. The HOST & NAS are connected via 2*10GB SFP+ The HOST server has 2*300GB SAS drives, RAID1 and will also have a VHDX for a WIndows 2016 Server SQL server guest. The VHDX to be stored on the Ready NAS if for the DC/F&P Windows Server 2016 standard. We want best performance for the VHDX stored on the NAS over the 10GB SFP+ to the Server Host (A Fuitsu rack server) iSCSI or SMB? Which would be quicker for VHD access from the Windows HOST? Maybe the NAS storage should be split from the autoconfigured X-RAID (raid 6) to maybe a RAID1 for the VHDX volume to give it more speed, and the remaining 8 disks be reset up as X-RAID (If this is possible?)4.4KViews0likes2CommentsNAS & ISCSI for home Vsphere lab
