D7000[v1] or D7000v2? Look for "Model" on the product label.
Firmware version?

_Which_ "The App"?

USB-Ethernet adapters exist. Other computers, with Ethernet ports,
exist.

In principle, a wireless connection should work, but many people
believe that an Ethernet connection is less likely to fail.

You can use a browser on your laptop to access the browser graphical user interface (GUI).
Connect to the wifi from the modem/router and then aim a browser at the usual addresses:
192.168.0.1 should work for a modem/router, unless you have changed it.
Update following this:

Wifi updates are a b it riskier than using a wired connection, but less so that they were. Probably easier then shelling out for extra widgets.
