should i expect the openvpn client on linux to succeed connecting to the vpn server on the fvx538?

No, not possible. The 538 does not support OpenVPN.
ubuntu 14.04 which is basically debian.
Like I said, the FVX538 does not support OpenVPN.
It does not matter which OS you are attempting to connect from.
Is does support IPSec VPN.
