I just purchased a Netgear Powerline 1000. The box contains two adapters and shows to plug one into an electrical outlet and the WiFi router and then shows the second adapter gets plugged into an electrical outlet with the ethernet cable then going to a computer.
My issue is that I want to extend the signal only for non-wired computers. Does this product work properly only if the end device is a wired ethernet ready device?

Generally, PLxxxx devices emulate Ethernet cables, so, yes.
There are other models (PLWxxxx) which include a wireless access point. Or, you could connect a separate wireless access point to the Ethernet port of a PLxxxx.

Where? By whom? Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your model number, and look for Documentation. Get the User Manual (at least). Read. On the PL1000 Product Data Sheet, I see things like "extend your Internet access". On the PLW1000 Product Data Sheet I see "extend your WiFi Internet access".

Add your own wireless access point. Practically any old wireless router can be pressed into service that way. (Details available on request.)

Unlikely. It doesn't say that on the box (mine at least) or in the Netgear literature. Maybe you got dud advice from a salesperson.
The PLW1000 is the one that comes with a wifi access point as the remote plug.
What you can do with the PL1000 is use the remote plug as the connection for a wifi extender, if you have something suitable lying around.
My Powerline network connects an Orbi router (in AP mode) to an R7800 (router mode). This provides a much better wifi network than the basic Powerline AP.
