Instructions for factory resetting R8000 router

Hi,

I was emailing with Support, but I guess my subscription for support ran out.

Issue:  I have no idea why, but my router is no longer accepting the answers to my security questions when I attempt to log in to it via web interface (I realize I can use the app, but that has very limited features).  Support told me that I have to do a factory reset.

Questions:  I understand that to do so simply requires holding in the reset button on the back of the unit until the orange light comes on, and then releasing.  My question is after that...  I presume that since it's a factory reset, I will need to re-create all of my networks and passwords, including the Admin password that I'm trying to get back in to working condition again?  How do I do that?  Do uninstall and reinstall the app on my phone so it "thinks" this is a new router on the system and proceed from there?  I just need to know how to get myself from factory reset, back to the settings and setup that I currently use.  Hoping not to have to re-enter new passwords for all of my connected devices.

Lastly, I'm not horribly tech saavy.  Please "dumb it down" if you are.

Thanks very much!

Chris

Don't use crappy apps for configuring the router after a factory reset. Use a browser and go to http://routerlogin.net or http://192.168.1.1

Does that mean your problem is fixed? Or do you need more?

If you are trying to use the "password recovery" option, there is a bug in Netgear's implementation of password recovery on some devices. You can get locked into a closed loop.

If password recovery is enabled, but you have not set the answers to the questions, it keeps sending you back to the beginning of the process. If you haven't already given the thing your personal answers, they are not in its memory and it has no way of knowing if they are correct.

If the standard factory password (password) does not work, then you will have to factory reset the thing to get back to that. Then either disable password recovery (check the manual for your device) or provide some answers to those questions.

Just go through the usual set up process.

If,  by any chance, you have a backup of your older settings you can restore from that. But you will still be left with the password issue.
