Firmware Update Instructions:

To update your router’s firmware, follow the instructions in your router’s user manual. To view your router’s user manual, visit:

Manually update FW on the router if this isn't seen on the routers web page:

NOTE: Use a wired PC and web browser to update router FW. If continued problems are seen after a FW update, it's recommended to try a factory reset and setup from scratch with out loading any saved configurations from backup files.

  • There's a new firmware dated 4/12/2022 for the R7900P, version 1.4.3.88

The release notes don't mention fixing this issue but I installed it, removed my manual DNS settings on two computers and so far haven't had the issue come back up.

Fingers crossed this fixes the DNS issue for good!

Thanks for the heads up.  Just updated and removed my manual DNS entries.  All good so far,  Cheers!

I've been running the latest firmware version (88) that released last week and, after several days, I've yet to run into the DNS Probe issues I had with 84. The IPv6 change didn't really work for me when I tried, so I had no choice but to revert to a previous working version, so I'm glad this latest version seems to be working.

Still have the DNS issue with the 88 version of firmware.  I went back to the 68 version that was working before. I can't have my internet bouncing up and down when working from home, doing teams calls. Tried uping IPv6 and that didn't help with the bounce at all. Can't believe 2 versions in a row with the same issues and no hotfix released.

They're not going to fix the issue. It's been going on now for nearly 6 months. Rolling back to old firmware is a security risk, which is one of the main roles of a home router/fw.  Manually adding DNS to the client resolves the issue but it's a pain since you need to do it for all devices and all NIC's, wired and wireless. I'll eventually replace my Netgear with another brand.  This has left a bad taste in my mouth and I will not consider Netgear in the future.

  • After reading this this thread about the buggy .88 issue with DNS I had to roll back to .68 to work smoothly.  I'm working from home and can't deal with such lame firmware bug, again and again.  I hope the Netgear VPs are seeing this so they can fix it for good.  I'll give them time to fix it or I'm going with ASUS.  Time is money, I'm willing to pay for reliable products.

  • This firmware breaks the Readyshare print utility. The router is not detected and shared printing is non functional. Had to revert to the previous version.

  • I've enabled IPv6 after I came to this thread and found the solution to my DNS issue, yes it's now working as it should be, thank you for all the members on this group for providing the info to this forum.

What I'm trying to get at is not all users are like me (or members of this group) looking for help before ditching the product, and Netgear tech supports need to do better instead of leaving the users hanging.

Glad you got it working. Be sure to save off a back up configuration to file for safe keeping. Saves time if a reset is needed.

  • Just an FYI Japan has transitioned from IPv4 to IPV6. IPv6 is the way to go. enabling IPv6 resolves lots of problem. As IPv6 is much simpler vs IPv4. For some reason in North America we are not transitioning to IPv6. Perhaps its a cost associated with it. This would definitely be untraditional to what North American's were known for. North America used to be the leader in new technologies. I suppose those days are fading away gradually.

  • I installed V1.4.3.88 firmware and as with V1.4.2.84 I am experiencing DNS errors on my Windows 10 PC. When I rolled back to V1.4.1.82 Hot Fix the problems went away.

    DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN

    Router: Netgear Nighthawk X6S AC4000 R8000P Router

    Modem: Netgear CM500

    ISP Provider: Comcast.net

Does anyone know how to fix this?

    Thanks,

    wglotz

Enable IPv6 on the router. Set Auto Detect.

Reboot the router, modem and all devices.

This is what I get when enabling IPv6 on router...

        Router's IPv6 Address On WAN

        Not available

        Router's IPv6 Address On LAN
