New firmware (V1.0.2.80) for the R7800
Some people here have reported problems with the V1.0.2.78 firmware on the R7800.
The browser graphical user interface (GUI) and the Genie for Windows tell me that there is now a V1.0.2.80 available.
Unfortunately, it is not available on the support pages for the R7800. So, it you want the update, you have to put your router's life in the hands of the automated update process.
I haven't had any problems with V1.0.2.78, and don't like the auto update, so I will wait for the manual download to show up.
Of course, no download means no release notes. (These are often thin on details anyway.) So we have no way of knowing what the new version claims to fix, if anything.

Re: New firmware (V1.0.2.80) for the R7800
Factory reset (like the past few updates,) updated, and so far no issues (unlike before I learned to factory reset for everything after .68 to prevent issues with their updater.)
I use it in router mode, before anyone asks.
I wonder if custom firmware posts should be banned from these discussions as they have nothing to do with the very specific official firmware topics separated by version number...

To give Netgear due credit, it rarely intervenes to kick out off-topic stuff.
The usual response when people ask about custom firmware is to point out that Netgear doesn't support it, and installing it removes your warranty protection, so it is a pointless thing to raise here.
But there are people who like to use third party firmware to – either to show off their smarts or to prove that it can be done.
There are also things that you can't do with stock firmware, some VPNs for example, where it would be churlish to ban people from suggesting alternatives.
I just use my router as a router. Nothing clever going on. So knowing about the official stuff is useful.
Not sure what you mean by "very specific official firmware topics", Netgear rarely posts anything official about firmware here. It is down to the rest of us to discover it.

Re: New firmware (V1.0.2.80) for the R7800
Sorry you were so confused.
I am talking about specifically-titled firmware version number topics - and to go into those topics and mention how great custom firmware is that has nothing whatsoever to do with the topic.
I hope that clarifies things for you.

Re: New firmware (V1.0.2.80) for the R7800
Netgear R7800 Firmware v1.0.2.80 contains BUGS
EXACLTLY SAME PROBLEMS and random REBOOT !!!
with firmware v1.0.2.74 or v1.0.2.76 or v1.0.2.78
R7800 reboots randomly after boot up .... works 2 minutes and reboot...
WIFI drops in AP MODE / unable to use AP MODE
R7800 v1.0.2.80 firmware always contains BUGS ...
Even with fresh and clean install :
Reset the router = push reset button for 10s... Still the same problem.

DO NOT UPDATE FIRMWARE v1.0.2.80 R7800
Back to firmware v1.0.2.68 and everything is OK again...

I like holding it in for over half a minute.
Works great in router mode. Upgrade without worry.

Re: New firmware (V1.0.2.80) for the R7800
1.0.2.80 works for me in AP mode. So did 1.0.2.76. Never tried .78, Been up steady for a day, but I will watch it.
I download the update and perform the update in the GUI using an Ethernet connection.
I then hold in a paperclip in the back for 15 seconds and let the device reboot.
I set it up manually in AP mode - using a fixed IP address, not DHCP.
My other options are:
- use the WAN port for the connection to my router
- no DFS channels
- no Smart Connect
- Beamforming on
- no MU-MIMO
- no HT160
- no Media Servers

Re: New firmware (V1.0.2.80) for the R7800
I just got my R7800 less than 2 months ago. It came with v68. I've been having issues with Android phone DNS/TLS/IMAP, so did the update via router to v80 this morning. No factory reset, just let it keep my settings (I know). But so far everything is working, no reboots. I won't know for a few days whether this solved my Android DNS/TLS/IMAP issues.

I think an alternative firmware is far more relevant for people having problems with the last 5 FW-updates, than you telling people what they meant with their words.
I will test this firmware in AP-mode today and give feedback if there are any problems.

Please give feedback if there isn't problems as well - even if you think that would also be irrelevant.

Re: New firmware (V1.0.2.80) for the R7800
From the v.1.0.2.68, in order to be sure, and to remove any doubt :
after a new fresh RESET
push RESET button >10s
LED flash amber
R7800 restarts
I just did the update again, one more time, by injecting the firmware file v1.0.2.80 via TFTP*
*it's a recovery process
https://kb.netgear.com/000059634/How-to-upload-firmware-to-a-NETGEAR-router-using-Windows-TFTP
firmware file flash v1.0.2.80 process OK ...
BUT, BUT
after R7800 restarts with the new v1.0.2.80 and the AP configuration,
I still have problems losing wifi and reboot randomly
R7800 reboots randomly after boot up
R7800 works in AP MODE 5 minutes .... lost connection...
WIFI drops in AP MODE .... works 2 minutes and reboot...
again...and again...and again ...
ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
.... Back to firmware v1.0.2.68 and everything is OK again...

Re: New firmware (V1.0.2.80) for the R7800
Have you ever factory reset the R7800 once it had .80 firmware on it already, or are you always factory resetting a previous version then installing .80?

Re: New firmware (V1.0.2.80) for the R7800
HELLO
...before v1.0.2.68 i've NEVER RESET my R7800
since theses firmwares are out
v.1.0.2.74 = R7800 bugs
v.1.0.2.76 = R7800 bugs
v.1.0.2.78 = R7800 bugs
v.1.0.2.80 = R7800 bugs
So, i always try to RESET BEFORE FLASH FIRMWARE ... to prevent any problem with old settings...
(but no change / still same pbs, wifi drops, lost connection ... router reboots after 3~5 min )...
so, right now :
I'm stilll on v1.0.2.68... works correctly

How about the question you were asked?

Re: New firmware (V1.0.2.80) for the R7800
Any chance you might want to change the AP to a different product since the firmware never works for you specifically? That way you can get the latest security fixes instead of intentionally staying vulnerable.

Re: New firmware (V1.0.2.80) for the R7800
My R7800 has always worked very well... i love it since 2 years...
i just would understand WHY (....i hope) there are always theses problems
since the latest updates (... greater than v1.0.2.68 )
it's abnormal... i think i'm not alone... many people explain the same pb...
....therefore, I am waiting for a hypothetical new firmware ( > v1.0.2.68 )
that works correctly

Re: New firmware (V1.0.2.80) for the R7800
R7800 / FW V1.0.2.80 / AP-mode
Here's a follow-up:
- Everything was fine for about a week, then router was out, reboot, ok.
- Again in about a week, no connection, reboot, ok.
- 2-3 days later disconnected, reboot, some minutes later disconnected, reboot, some minutes later disconnected, reboot, some minutes later disconnected, reboot, some minutes later disconnected, reboot, some minutes later disconnected, reboot, some minutes later disconnected, reboot, some minutes later disconnected, reboot, some minutes later disconnected, reboot, some minutes later disconnected, reboot, some minutes later disconnected, reboot, some minutes later disconnected, reboot, some minutes later disconnected, going crazy, back to FW V1.0.2.68.
So, problem definitly not solved with this firmware.
