Nighthawk R7000 not getting anywhere near my internet speed?

Hey guys,

Let me preface this with the fact that I'm quite new to how all of this works, but am doing my best to learn. Now, onto the issue:

I recently moved from my previous residence. At my previous residence I was getting ~650 Mbps download speed on wifi, 750mbps from a hardwired ethernet connection from my router. Fast forward to my new residence here, I get horrible internet, and I currently am situated quite some distance from my router (on the other side of the yard) so it's imperative I get proper internet speeds. My internet plan is for 1gbps down, and I'm getting ~700mbps from the modem which is good, however I'm getting maximum 100mbps from right next to my router (Netgear NightHawk R7000) on the 2.4ghz network, and it's capping out at 230mbps on the 5G network. This is consistent whether I'm on wifi or connected via ethernet connection. I've contacted my ISP and they sent a guy out who verified that their modem is putting out a proper speed, and that all the cabling looks good. The problem is, due to my distance from the router I can't connect to the 5G network at all, and the 100mbps on the 2.4ghz network turns into 5-10mbps by the time it gets to my setup.

I'm quite confused how my router could be putting out 650-750mbps at my previous residence, and now with the exact same setup it's maxing out at 230mbps... Thank you all so much if you read through this word salad, I would really appreciate any help or ideas from all of you here.

That wifi speed is faster than many wifi clients can deliver. Not much that anyone can say without knowing exactly what devices you were using.

It might be worth a bit of background reading on wifi speeds.

@duckware knows their stuff and can bust a few myths and cut through marketing hype.

Wifi speeds depend on many things, including the materials used in your property. It sounds like you have a layout that is beyond the capabilities of a basic R7000 router.

It is not wise to rely on wifi to connect to a router that is a long way from the wifi clients. Remember, 5 GHz wifi may be faster than  2.4 GHz but it has a shorter range.

You might like to rethink the layout of your network.

Relying on a single R7000 router, always a mid-range device, may not be the best choice. That is why many users have taken to Mesh networks with routers and satellites that can cover the area.

Try plugging your layout into the filters on the product pages:

Then check back here for reports on the things you are considering, but remember that people turn up in this community with problems, not compliments. So look at reviews on Amazon, for example.
