Nighthawk R8000 - Port forwarding issues - Frustrated at so simple a task
Talk about wasting time for a simple task like Port forwarding:
Goal: Establishing an External Accessable Minecraft Server
Equipment:
- MC Server : Mac Mini (running successfully) Firewall not running
- NH R8000 Router
- SB6141 Modem (modem is a straight passthrough ; no FW)
- Internet Service TWC
Created Custom Service as per instructions in router:
- Port forward to port 25565 against Servers internal IP address 192.168.1.X
Accessable 'whithin' the network.
Canyouseeme.org doesn't see the port as open
Testing:
- Connected server directly to Modem
- Port found as open; Successful connected externally to the MC server
- Validation that TWC is NOT blocking this port
Dropped back into network and still no luck.
Was on latest firmware; but saw a post from someone at NG who suggested for someone else to downgrade. Did that to v 1.0.2.46_1.0.97
- Results: No luck
Also tried setting NAT Filtering to Open
So besides getting rid of this Router; what next?
SOLVED:
- One more piece of hardware that wasn't listed. Vonage Modem. The setup had it after the modem but before the router. This impacted the external IP address and more than likely caused the blocked port.
- Moved it behind the router and port is working now.
- Just need to finalize changing the Vonage settings, but that is secondary to getting the MC server running. :0

The wheels on the bus go round and round.
Usually the vonage box is placed before router to resolve an inadequate upstream bandwidth, you might have to move it back and let it do the routing and use the r8000 in AP mode.
