Nighthawk R9000 - Slow Wifi

My 2.4GHz and 5.0GHz channels are significantly slower than the gigabit speed flowing into my home via fiber.  I can run a speed test on my iPhone 12 Pro while simultaneously connected to the 2.4GHz channel and standing 3 feet away from the router itself with no obstructions between the phone and the antenna and only reach speeds from 60 to 80 Mbps.  The Firmware is up to date after checking multiple times.  What other options do I have to resolve the issue?  I have also disabled the 20/40 MHz coexistence as suggested by some Youtube videos, and have not witnessed any improvements.

  • I'd argue 60-80mbps over 2.4ghz is pretty reasonable. Its a slow network and sensitive to interference. My current home struggles with 2.4ghz because of interference from the surrounding houses. It wasn't until AX that I could get 100+mbps and that's not sustained.

what speeds do you get over 5ghz?

That's how wifi works. It is never as fast as wired. The speed you get depends on the wifi clients you use rather than the router.

It might be worth a bit of background reading.

    Understand Wi-Fi 4/5/6 (802.11 n/ac/ad/ax)

@duckware knows their stuff and can bust a few myths and cut through marketing hype.

What is the actual firmware version number you have installed?  The term up to date does not provide anything to verify.

What is the brand name and model number of the ONT between your router and the internet?

Recommend you use the stand alone Ookla installable application for testing throughput.  This removes the web browser application from the data path.  Available from the play store.

Smart Connect should be disabled?  Under Advanced -> Setup -> Wireless Setup

Dynamic QoS should be disabled?  Under Quality of Service.

Traffic Meter should be disabled?  Under Advanced -> Advanced Setup -> Traffic Meter

Access Control should be disabled?  Under Advanced -> Security -> Access Control

Is IPv6 enabled?  If your ISP supports it, it should be enabled.  Under Advanced -> Advanced Setup -> IPv6

Is the 2.4 GHz channel selection on Auto?  Try manual channels 1, 6, 11.

Is the 5 GHz channel selection on Auto?  Try channel 48.

In real life, you should be getting 120+ Mbps on the 2.4 GHz band and 300+ Mbps on the 5 GHz band.
