Nighthawk Traffic Meter Access Point

I am currently using my Nighthawk R8000 in AP mode because google fiber's network box has horrible wifi and because i can't just replace it with the R8000. I am wondering if anyone has successfully setup a round about way to get traffic metering to work when the router is being used as an access point? Is there a way to set the router as an AP, with a static ip, turn off dhcp, and get traffic meter info? Everytime I go through the setup the Genie says it can't find internet and forces me to go to AP Mode.
