Nighthawk X10 AD7200 configuring with Asus DSL-N16 Wireless-N300 as Modem

Hi,

I'm quite new to setting up modems and routers.
I was provided an Asus DSL-N16 router/modem by my ISP.

I bought the Nighthawk X10 AD7200 to use as a router.

I let the Nighthawk app do all the configuring but I feel like maybe there are some ways to help with a more stable connection. It just doesn't feel like it is as quick as it could be.

The only real changes I've made to the routers are setting up on the Asus modem a dns server to 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1.

The Nighthawk is set to receive DNS automatically from ISP. I wasn't sure if this would use the Asus modems DNS (which I wanted) or override back to ISP settings.

Also I'm not sure if it's possible to use the Asus modem for as little as possible as I'm guessing the more the Nighthawk handles the quicker everything will be?

I also have Plex installed on my laptop, and when trying to setup remote access it says I have "Double-NAT". I tried to fix this by trying some bits, and manually setting a port, but this failed, so I reverted what I changed.

Hope this is the correct place to post this!

Thanks for any help!

Luke

Awesome thank you for confirming Antinode.

I guess I will need to decide what's best, as setting my Nighthawk to repeater mode kind of made me feel like I was wasting its potential a bit, hopefully I can find a way to put the Asus to modem only, then I can pay for the fixed IP to get rid of double NAT. I still need to set up an always on Plex server anyway, so I still have much to do.

Thank you all for your time helping with this!

Reason your having issues with your Plex and potentially your other issues is because of that double nat.

You're running the asus in router mode and the netgear.

You're 2 easiest options?

1. Disable the routing portion of the Asus. Place it in modem only mode. I'd contact Asus for help setting that up as they're the experts with their device. (or your isp). This'll let let the netgear run as the only router.

Or

2. Place the netgear in AP (access point) mode. this disables its own routing functions but still lets its wireless and ethernet ports to work. You can potentially also turn off the wireless on the Asus if you do this. its not needed and if you don't do so, make sure to seperate out the wireless channels so they aren't interfering with each other.

Thank you so much for the information!

I've just been chatting to my ISP Support. Their advice was as follows:

Have you purchased a static I.P. with our services?

That'll likely be why, at default our services use dynamic I.P to get to you and are split at the LNS server that's where the double NAT comes from. Static I.Ps are £1.49 in addition per month it will resolve the issue and also allow port forwarding.

Would this be what caused the double NAT?

To be honest it didn't sound like they knew much.

No. Double NAT is a consequence of having two routers on your network. You will see the same thing even if you fix the IP address.

Both of your routers are trying to do "NAT", network address translation.

what is double nat - Google Search

@plemans has explained how to deal with this. Turn off the router bit of either your Asus DSL-N16 router/modem or your #R9000 router.

In the case of the Asus DSL-N16 router/modem, turning off the router bit means putting it into modem only (bridge) mode. (See earlier link to Google search.) This is not to be confused with wireless bridge mode (WDS).

For the R9000 it means putting it into wireless access point (AP) mode. The manual explains how to do this. But beware the lost features:

Disabled Features on the Router when set to AP Mode | Answer | NETGEAR Support

At a quick glance the manual for the Asus thing is silent on how you put the thing into modem only mode.

I am not familiar with this modem but I did come across this page:

How to make DSL use WAN bridge to router? | Official Support | ASUS Global

See the bit "2.When DSL doesn't need to surf Internet."

I have nod idea of this will achieve the required mode. If your ISP has a user community like this, that would be a good place to pose the question.

Out of interest, why did you buy a second router when you already had the Asus modem/router? Your answer could help to guide on which strategy you could deploy.

Re: Nighthawk X10 AD7200 configuring with Asus DSL-N16 Wireless-N300 as Modem

Hi Michael,

I bought the Nighthawk originally for the Plex functionality. I got one for me and one for my parents, but quickly realised that the router was massively underpowered when it came to Plex. Good for some things (maybe direct play of small libraries), but really bad for anything more intensive. I held onto the router because it was much better than the ISP provided router, and thought it would be great for speeding up my internet.

I'll give that a try, so set Asus router to bridge mode, and Nighthawk to AP mode.

Will be back soon!

That should be set Asus router to bridge mode or Nighthawk to AP mode.

Do both at the same time and you will not have a router.

I so enjoy certainty in the absence of information.

In fact, your ISP could use carrier-grade NAT, which adds another
router (which is out of your control):

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrier-grade_NAT

> [...] You will see the same thing even if you fix the IP address.

Unless the actual cause was carrier-grade NAT, which would not be
used if your ISP gave you a static IP address.

One way to be sure (based on actual evidence) would be to examine the
WAN/Internet IP address of your main router (DSL-N16).  If that's a
public address, then making it a static (public) address wouldn't help.
If it's a private address, then getting a static address might help (by
avoiding CGN).

Whatever that address is, plug it into the form at:

Re: Nighthawk X10 AD7200 configuring with Asus DSL-N16 Wireless-N300 as Modem

Thank you for all the great replies!

I've set the Netgear router to AP, and Asus back to normal.

I couldn't get the Asus Router to work as bridge, it just wouldn't work no matter what I tried. I will maybe look into the settings a bit more online to see if there is something advanced to do to get it working!

I've checked and I think I still have double NAT, I'm still unable to connect to Plex from outside the network. Also when tracert from cmd, it is giving me private address for the first two. I'm guessing this must be what you said @antinode, my ISP are NATing me before the internet reaches my house. I guess I might look into buying a static IP address.

I hope to get Netgear back running normally with Asus as bridge, but maybe it's not possible, I will keep trying though! Or possibly invest in a better little modem.

Thank you so much for all the support!

Being able to see what you can see might make it easier to do more
than "guessing".

   Still true.

Hi Antinode,

My Wan IP on the Asus DSL-N16 is: 100.64.61.16.

Please find attatched also the tracert on cmd to googles dns.

Many thanks

That sure looks to me like CGN.  Apparently the information from your
ISP was valid, and £1.49/month would improve the situation, as claimed.
