[Nighthawk X6 R8000] Router Left Open

Nighthawk X6 R8000

I had a strange event with this router after an update. The router desperately wanted to have a WPS setup. So bad that it ignored some settings to reactivate WPS and the Guest Account. I had no password set for 5ghz Guest Accounts. I had Enterprise WPA for goodness sake, why change my settings when I had turned off WPS and 5ghz Guest Accounts, intentionally!

Unfortunately, I discovered it after somebody ( a neighbor) connected. Hopefully they just used it for InternetI

I recommend everybody put a WPA2  63 char random password for all deactivated Guest Accounts. If some update wants to flip the Guest Account on, at least it will have a password.

  • Oh wow, that's quite a hiccup, especially after an update! You'd think the router would respect your existing security settings instead of going rogue. Your tip about setting a strong WPA2 password for deactivated Guest Accounts is a smart one. It's a good fail-safe for anyone else who might run into a similar issue. Thanks for sharing your experience; it's a cautionary tale for us all to double-check settings after updates. Stay secure! 👍🔒
