Not getting 1 gig download

Hi Guys,

Ok, so here is the thing. I did search and see others have same questions, but seems that I tried disabling certain things as mentioned did not work. I have the R8500. I do get the 1 gig when I'm wired in to my iMac. I do not when I'm wireless on the 5GZ band. I get a max of about 650 down. On the 2.4, it's only like 100 down. I have no idea what's going on.

Are there specific settings I need to put in? I know that I have SSID broadcast on and the Smart connect for the 2 5GHZ bands. I have the Dynamic Qos off and I have the "define my bandwith filed out. 1000 down and 40up. Everything else is default. No guest setups or anything. Is this router capable of 1 gig down? I know Blue ridge offered to rent me an EERO router and guarenteed me the 1gig speeds. I can't belive that can and mine can't. The firmware is V1.0.2.130

Anyone have any answers? I'm not very tech savvy with this stuff, but I can try.

Wifi will never match wired. Its physics.

This may be a long read, but it can dispel many illusions:

Understand Wi-Fi 4/5/6 (802.11 n/ac/ad/ax)

Why blame the router?  Does your (unspecified) "my iMac" do any
better with any other router?  Blame assignment is job one, I always
say.

I'd expect 2.4GHz to be slower than 5GHz.  Wouldn't you?

You said that it was, with an Ethernet connection.

A Web search for terms like, say:

      WiFi  speed

might turn up all kinds of interesting information.

Re: Not getting 1 gig download

I only have one router. If i bypass the router and plug directly into the modem, I get 1000 down fully. When i go back to wireless on the router, it's down again. I'm not tying to blame any one item.

Yes, i know 2.4 is a little slower, but 6 times slower? 600 vs 100. If you didn't want to have any valuable input, why bother answering? I was posting what I did so far. It's not like I posted up and was like, what's wrong, I didn't try anything. I attempted to see what it can be. Maybe my search is not as good as your search.

I'm not an IT engineer, i just wanted some guidance to maybe help me out. Thats all.

Is yours the only router in the world to which you have access?

> [...] If i bypass the router and plug directly into the modem, I get

And with a wired connection to the router?

> [...] I do get the 1 gig when I'm wired in to my iMac. [...]

I took that to mean that the you got the expected 1Gb/s with a wired
connection to the router.  Which suggests that the source of your
complaint is somewhere in the wireless stuff, not the basic router
functions.

> [...] I'm not t[r]ying to blame any one item.

Why not?  What's the point, otherwise?  I thought that solving the
problem meant finding the gizmo which is causing it.  What's _your_
goal?

> [...] i know 2.4 is a little slower, but 6 times slower? 600 vs 100.

How much faster did you expect 5GHz to be?  Which of us do you think
should be investing his time on that Web search?

I have no idea how fast the wireless networking (hardware, software)
in your (unspecified) "my iMac" might be, but I'm willing to believe
that the connection speed between your router and your (unspecified) "my
iMac" might depend on the capabilities of the devices at both ends of
that connection.  What do you think?

> [...] If you didn't want to have any valuable input, why bother
> answering? [...]

If you didn't intend to provide any useful information about your
equipment, then why complain about the problem in the first place?

> [...] i just wanted some guidance [...]

I just asked for some basic information.  Apparently neither of us
got a useful response.

Re: Not getting 1 gig download

That was super helpfull, unlike the other answers here. Blue ridge tech support felt that I should get the same 1000 both ways, so that's why I was feeling that. I will read it now.

Speed both ways depends on your ISP and what you signed up for. Most fiber companies would be symetrical, in other words same in both directions, but cable is a different story. Cable that I know of is asymetrical. Not the same down and up. Example, I have Comcast gig plan. Get gig down, but only 40 up.

Re: Not getting 1 gig download

This is a limitation of DOCSIS itself. I heard the upcoming DOCSIS 4.0 will "fix" this issue and be able to provide symmetrical speeds

Re: Not getting 1 gig download

I need to google that lol. That’s where it gets really technical and I don’t understand. But, these are real answers.

Thanks.

Re: Not getting 1 gig download

I have the same: 1 gig down, 40up. The up is on point. I wish I could get 1gig up and down. I’ve never heard of that here.
