R6400v2 Internet light is solid amber

Hi - I have been trying to connect my R6400v2 router to the modem. Once connected, the internet light stays amber. I have downloaded the newest firmware, and run numerous tests and fixes to see if I can gain access to the internet. I can plug the router that was provided by the ISP and the internet works perfectly fine. I have tried MAC spoofing, and reset the modem multiple times.
Hoping for some help as I’m at my wits end about how I can make this router work.
Appreciate any help.

That is probably the issue.

TPG has some strange settings.

What firmware are you on?

What modem are you using?

I’m on the R6400v2. I downloaded and updated the router with the latest firmware being 1.0.4.84_10.0.58

Re: R6400v2 Internet light is solid amber

First try it like this.

1. unplug all the devices from the modem and the router. including coax. I'd even factory reset the router back to stock.

2. reconnect the coax to the arris. turn it on. give it several minutes to fully boot.

3. connect port 1 of arris to wan port on router. don't plug anything into port 2 of the arris (leave it like this, its not usable).

4. power up the router. give it several minutes.

5. attempt setup.

If it doesn't work.

try downgrading the R6400v2 to version 1.0.3.66, factory reset it after it downgrades, and manually install the router. disable autoupdate and try the setup again as outlined above.

Also, check your ethernet cable. it wouldn't be the first time a bad cable caused issues.

Re: R6400v2 Internet light is solid amber

I’ve attempted all of the above, but still doesn’t seem to working. The IP address is always coming up 0.0.0.0 btw.
I understand that there’s obviously an issue between the router and the modem, but is there any other fixes? I feel like I’ve tried everything but it just doesn’t seem to work.

Re: R6400v2 Internet light is solid amber

did you try the downgrade?

have you hardwired into the modem to make sure its working properly?

Re: R6400v2 Internet light is solid amber

Yes I have downgraded it to the firmware you stated. The modem is definitely working because when I plug the router in that was given from ISP, the internet works

Did you try factory resetting both devices and reinstalling in the manner I described above?

Does this get a good internet connection without the router in the picture?

It gets a reasonable connection using the router the ISP provided. But I have bought the Netgear router as an upgrade.

Which "The IP address"?  The IP address of the WAN/Internet interface
on the R6400v2?  (ADVANCED > ADVANCED Home : Internet Port : Internet IP
Address?)  In this context, "0.0.0.0" simply means "none".

More between the R6400v2 and your ISP (_through_ the modem).

   Should be harmless.

Has that "the router" a maker and model number?  Have you looked at
its configuration?  Does it use any potentially unusual features like,
say, PPPoE?

> [...] I have tried MAC spoofing, [...]

Not much meat on that bone.  Whose MAC address did you assign to
what, exactly?

Re: R6400v2 Internet light is solid amber

The IP address when testing the router status.

Ok so should I contact my ISP to see if they can help with it?

The router I was given is a TP Link - Archer VR1600v. I’m not sure how to check the configuration as it was just a plug in and go setup.

When doing the setup via the wizard, I can change the MAC address to that of the router the ISP provided. I’ve also tried changing it to the MAC address of my computer that I used to set it up.

According to Google that "router" is really a DSL modem/router.

If this is the case, then the R6400v2 is not a simple replacement. You are swapping out a modem/router for a router.

I would not expect it to be "a plug in and go setup".

Putting a modem/router after a modem is rarely that simple.

Heaven only knows what the CM8200 is doing in there. That is a cable modem.

Re: R6400v2 Internet light is solid amber

Ok that makes sense, and also makes me feel stupid for not picking that up.

Is there anyway of using the netgear router with the current setup? Will it connect after the modem/router? Or do I just need to get rid of it?

Routers are essentially all singing and all dancing when it comes to the internet service they can handle. They don't care. What matters it the stuff that sits in front of the router. Your arrangement is just plain baffling.

I don't actually understand what you are using there.

As I understand it you have a cable modem (Arris CM8200) followed by a DSL modem (TP Link - Archer VR1600v). These use incompatible modem technologies.

Let's start at the beginning. You have NBN in Australia. That is not much help.

Re: R6400v2 Internet light is solid amber

Ok so I have HFC nbn. The arris is provided by NBN, and connects to the wall.

From there I was given the TP Link modem/router by my ISP (TPG) which they connected to the nbn modem.

TPG provides the internet and that’s all.

You’re a legend mate. Thanks so much. Worked straight away. And apologies about the poor explanation, felt like I had tried everything so was close to giving up. Cheers

NBN is a dog's dinner. It appears here often.

This place might be useful if you hit more brick walls:

Another victim posted it a whole back. Apparently, your ISP is hopeless at support.
