R6700v2, Nighthalk AC1750 has signal but wont connect to modem

I have Xfinity as my ISP using a cable modem I bought from them.  My router is Nighthalk AC1750 Model R6700v2.  I came back from vacation and found I had WiFi signal but no connection to the internet.  Xfinity came out and said it was a bad modem and then proceeded to say the router was bad too after replacing the modem and still not connecting to the internet (they suggested it was possibly from a power surge that took out both the modem and the modem-router interfacing).  The router is just over a year old, (bought new from BestBuy). Its not that I don't trust them; but, is this a reasonable scenario or not?  If it is, can it be fixed with a reset?

It may help to reboot the whole network in the right order.

Be sure to restart your network in this sequence:

  • Turn off and unplug modem.
  • Turn off router and computers.
  • Plug in and turn on modem. Wait 2 minutes for it to connect.
  • Turn on the router and wait 2 minutes for it connect.
  • Turn on computers and rest of network.

Re: R6700v2, Nighthalk AC1750 has signal but wont connect to modem

Thanks for the feedback.  The first thing I did was to test the Cat5 cable I plugged it into the new modem at one end and my laptop at the other, it would not connect with 3 of the 4 ports. I then moved it to the port my bluray was plugged into, that one worked.  I then plugged the router into the modem into the port I got signal from following what Michael outlined and the router booted up and was working. I then plugged the bluray in and made sure they both still would connect to the internet. They both are working. Thanks again.
