R7000 Nighthawk AC1900 keeps resetting to factory settings randomly
Randomly occasionally turn on my PC to find that R7000 is blocking access to most webstires. The only fix appears to be to go to 192.168.1.1 and re-do the initial setup.
It happened twice today, without any power outtages, surges or anything. My was PC just idle and it happened again.
The router is a few years old, is there a battery I can replace or something?

What Firmware version is currently loaded?
What is the Mfr and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?Routers do not have a battery.
Be sure to save off a back up configuration to file for safe keeping.

I have no idea what firmware version other than it says there is no new update when I update.
Nothing has changed in this setup in years. I am hardwired from the pc to the router, the router is connected to a modem/router combo from the cable company. The only change that has happened there at all ever is that my speed has gone up.
I have done nothing fancy with any settings of any kind. I ran the initial setup each time it happens and it's all default and router mode. There is no apparent trigger.

Couple of options,
1. Configure the modem for transparent bridge or modem only mode. Then use the NG router in router mode. You'll need to contact the ISP for help and information in regards to the modem being bridged correctly.
2. If you can't bridge the modem, disable ALL wifi radios on the modem, configure the modems DMZ/ExposedHost or IP Pass-Through for the IP address the NG router gets from the modem.
3. Or disable all wifi radios on the modem and connect the NG router to the modem, LAN to LAN configure AP mode on the NG router.

drbretto With the absolute greatest of respect and there is no offence intended here, but have you actually ever taken the time to read the router manual? Your posts merely indicate that you perhaps have next to no knowledge of the product, from knowing or upgrading the router firmware, or how to set the router up for optimal performance for your particular environment. As FURRYe38 pointed out, there's no batteries in routers, so not sure where that idea has come from.
There's no denying, the R7000 AC 1900 is not a perfect router by a long chalk. My own was doing great right up until the latest firmware when inexplicably, v.128 just broke my 5ghz WiFi making it unusable. I reverted to firmware v.126, and everything went back to normal, perfect, no issues. I've learnt a lesson myself there, i.e. I've reached a point whereby upgrading the firmware for this particular router, is probably pointless. Much like the Nighthawk App, tells me there are no updates for my router when there clearly is, all because Netgear haven't seemingly upgraded their App to account for a firmware that's now been out for several weeks. I doubt with all of the 'security' upgrades the R7000 has had over the last 18 months, that it's in any way flawed enough now to require much more tinkering.
So my personal advice is, if the router is giving you that many issues and everything you've been advised to do doesn't resolve it, get another router, but take the time to sit down and learn how it works and what it's limitations are. Learning how to use equipment these days seems to be very much a dying art. Something goes wrong, seek out a forum and expect a fix. Forums are great and for the most part, advice you get from very knowledgeable guys and girls here is excellent, but they're armchair diagnostics and they don't know you or your environment.

No, I have spent exactly 0 seconds reading the manual because I am completely uninterested in the finer details of my router. It's not a lost art. You are interested. The fact that you even have an account here and are commenting on other people's issues is proof that you are interested. This is greatly appreciated by people like me who are not interested but might feel the need to ask a question once every 5 years. But other people do not read their router manuals cover to cover or even think about how they work most of the time.
What is the battery question about? I mean, the thing kept resetting its own settings to factory after 5 years of use. On many devices, like motherboards, that could be the CMOS battery. This was a perfectly reasonable question to ask. It was already answered. Notice how I'm not asking if you've read the manual for your motherboard, because you wouldn't if you're not into computer hardware. Get what I mean here?
It has been on default settings since the day I got it, including automatic updates. This hasn't been a problem until recently. I am assuming updates are done on purpose for security reasons. I do not wish to run outdated firmware just to keep thie error from happening. I am definitely not interested in leaving security vulnerabilities only to not know if that was ever even the problem, only to find out it resets again in a month or whatever.
The router is 5 years old, it's lived a good life. Since there doesn't appear to be an obvious known fix, I will just get a new one.
