R7000 has half the wifi speed as ethernet connection

I have "gigabit" internet via Xfinity. I am running my own SB2800 cable modem and using a R7000 for the router (V1.0.9.88_10.2.88). I am getting the same speeds (900+) directly out of the ethernet ports on the router as I am if I connect directly out of the cable modem via ethernet. Wifi, however, tops out at around 400. This is within 8 feet of the R7000, utilizing the 5g channel, with a very strong connection. I am on a Macbook Pro with:
AirPort Extreme (0x14E4, 0x152) on a Firmware Version: Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (7.21.171.134.1a2)
I don't have QoS enabled and parental controls are not enabled. I have resset and restarted the router many times. Is this the fastet that I can expect with the R7000? If I want to get closer to the 900 mark, do I need a different wifi router?

Router is fine, but I suggest you read and understand this web pages:

Not knowing the wireless device 802.11 speed nor the number of antenna's, I'd say you are doing good. The R7000 and most other routers have 2 antenna's per SSID. Some do have MU-MIMO capability (Google it if you don't understand) but that too requires a router with that feature and a wireless device that has it as well.
It all comes down to matched h/w capability, the router and device. Just like many phones have AC capability, all that means is they can connect to a 5Ghz SSID usually.
Oh, the fairly new 802.11 AD devices, well, there are not many, and not many routers that put that speed out. However some devices have poor record of reaching the speed and f/w is not mature.
