R8000 Half-Gigabit Speed

I have Gigabit internet which, when connecting my computer directly to the modem, I'm getting this speed:

whereas when the R8000 is in between I'm getting about half:

Note: this is for the WIRED Gigabit ethernet port on the R8000

I don't know if MAC cloning will affect performance.  According to this review, the R8000 should be able to hit 800 Mbps in the downstream direction.

Hello, I'm no expert..  When connected to the router.

Login to router. Click advanced and the in the interent port box click show statistics.

This will show you the connection status and the link speed.

This is what my stats look like.  I've not got Gigabit internet 😞

Might help for trouble shooting ?

Re: R8000 Half-Gigabit Speed

@carll76

He's getting 500+ Mbps through the R8000, so the link speed is certainly 1000 Mbps.  That's not the issue.

@yashi

Some features may impose a major performance penalty on the router.  These can include QoS, Port Forwarding, Block Sites, and Block Services. I recently read that PPPoE can cause a drop like this.  This is not surprising because the router's CPU has to get involved in the packet processing chain.

I would recommend resetting back to factory settings and perform a speed test.  Hopefully, you will see full Gigabit speeds.  Then, selectly re-enable features one by one until you see the speed drop.  That'll be the culprit.

Re: R8000 Half-Gigabit Speed

@TheEther

Thanks for your help.

I tried your suggestion: I reset the router back to factory settings, and the ONLY thing I changed after the reset was to change the MAC address of the router because my ISP is tied to the MAC address of my Desktop computer. I hope this does not affect performance.

Anyways, after the reset the problem persists:

With R8000 in between I'm getting:

With the modem directly to the desktop:

Re: R8000 Half-Gigabit Speed

Apparently the MAC cloning was the culprit:

I worked on the problem hard all yesterday trying to tweak things and even tried DD-WRT. But nothing worked. I gave up yesterday and just went to bed, apparently I gave up exactly after leaving the router in default factory settings, without even doing the MAC cloning to make the internet work. Overnight, the ISP somehow gave a new lease on the router's default MAC address, and when I woke up there was internet available. Low and behold, I test the speed and it reaches even 940Mbits/s, just as when the modem is connected directly to the computer.

Thanks @TheEther

Re: R8000 Half-Gigabit Speed

Dumb question, but I have post flu shot.  Are the successful gig people resetting the factory standards for the router or the CPU?
