R8000 - Have to load every page 2x after installing V1.0.4.74_10.1.80

I updated my R8000/X6 to V1.0.4.74_10.1.80 yesterday.

Now when i go to many websites (e.g this one) I first i get 'site not found' then i refresh the page (F5) and it loads.

I tried firefox, Chrome and Edge... it does not always happen but it happens a lot and it's a new problem since yesterday.

Of course i also had a windows 10 update at the same time so not sure maybe that's the problem too, just checking if anyone else has this problem. I have the same problem on 2 computers in different browsers.

This sounds like a problem I had,  Try this:

Go to into routeradmin pages go to advanced home and note the dns entries.

Go to windows control panel and click on ‘Network and sharing centre’

Click ‘change adaptor settings’. DoubleClick the ethernet/wifi adaptor and click properties,

highlight Internet protocol version 4(TCP/IPv4) click properties:

Click ‘use the following DNS server address’ and enter dns numbers in the ‘preferred dns server’ and alternative server boxes.

It seems that Netgear may have somehow screwed up the dns settings as well as removing the remote settings page.

    Hope this helps

  • Anytime there's an issue after a firmware upgrade, the first thing I recommend is a factory reset and reinstall.

Netgear broke their DNS in the latest firmware.  They need to fix it.

Manually setting DNS on clients is not a fix.  Rolling back to flawed firmware is also not a fix.

Robjak, Has Netgear even acknowledged they have a DNS Problem with their latest firmware?

I agree that the solution to change adapter settings on the client is only a work-arround but at least it fixes some annoying glitches in services on my PC. Not even sure i can do this on ALL my devices....

The error I got was indeed DNS related.

The weird thing is that my browser first gives this error, then it often auto-reloads and works. Services like Teams, AWS, OneDrive, etc.. behave a bit erratic as sometimes the connection works and then it stops

Still hoping Netgear will come with a real fix of this apparent bug.

At least better to know that it was indeed a Netgear problem...

For me most of the time it did reload, but sometimes it did not.  I rolled back firmware quickly, so i do not know how it would affect the clients on my network.  DNS issues can be very bad for alot of apps.   My wife works from home and cant have her with issues because i will not hear the end of it.  And i cant troubleshoot her issues when i am not there.

For now, i am running a FW that has security flaws.  I do not like this.  I am not happy.

Also have this error, getting DNS_PROBE_POSSIBLE after the firmware upgrade. It will reload okay but this is annoying and can make some logins fail.

I had just gone back to the V6400v2 after putting it in the corner for having other issues on a previous firmware.

Changing the DNS to use Cloudfare is a good workaround but I am waiting for a solution from NetGear.

With WFH and school kids there are 5 laptop/computers and we each use 3-4 browsers! First world problem, I know.

        Hi Guys,

I am experiencing the same issue and it is very annoying especially working from home and using multiple  SSO Logins forwarding pages and half of them constanlty failing.

is there any way to install an older FW? Is it offcially supported?

  • I'm having this same issue on the latest firmware for the R8500 Firmware Version 1.0.2.154

Extremely annoying. It effects not only the browser but various apps as well such as Steam, Epic Games Store, etc.

I ended up rolling back to the previous FW version and hope that Netgear gets its ish together.

      Just a small update,

It seems that is rolling back to the previous/original FW resolved the issue

It has been a month and Netgear has not fixed it. What are we supposed to do if they dont fix it.

The latest release was to fix security issues.  How important are these security fixes?

  • I was happy to see that I'm not the only one having this issue with version V1.0.4.74_10.1.80.  I upgraded a little over a month ago from V1.0.4.74_10.1.75.  After having to hit refresh/reload on about every 5th web page from a different vendor, I went back to the old version.  I waited a week and upgraded again with the same results.  I then again went back to . . . 1.75.  I've tried this 4 times now so I know it's the router firmware and not my computers.  I tried the solution to hard code the DNS into windows.  While this works (thank you), it is not a fix.  I don't want to force a DNS at the node level but want the router to assign it.  I use openDNS and block port 53 to help keep all devices on my network a little safer.  The solution works when I unblock port 53.

For now I'm going to run on V1.0.4.74_10.1.75 until a new firmware is supplied.

    • not sure if next update will be anytime soon ? it stinks that all these customers have to use older version to make router perform normal.

Netgear doesn't release when updates are coming. Even those of us who might get to try beta firmware don't hear about it until it happens.

      • just updated to new firmware ending in 82 and its seems like still same issue with DNS lots of websites coming back server not found ???????????????? same as firmware ending in 80 not sure what to do ? thinking about rolling back again ?

  • I've been plagued by this problem on my R8500 (FW V1.0.2.154_1.0.102) for months now, and it finally got annoying enough to investigate. I was happy to find the forum complaints but disappointed there's no firmware update yet. I picked this thread to reply since it has the most posts on the topic.

My problem was worst with Chrome on my work laptop, but recently seems to have affected other browsers and devices.

I rolled back to the V1.0.2.144_1.0.99 firmware, and so far - so good, with no DNS errors.

Here are two benchmarks to illustrate the problem:

    • DNSBench reported "DNS queries are not being consistently answered" with the 154 firmware but now says "DNS services are available and working." Oddly, DNSBench didn't raise an issue with DNS reliability in its conclusion report with 154. My router was at the bottom of DNSBench's response time list but is now near the top.
    • Namebench reported 111 ms average, 631 ms max with 7 NX (non-existant domains) on 154. Now I'm at 15 ms avg, 280 ms max, and no NX. This agrees with DNSBench, and my internet just feels "snappier."

So my questions are around what to do now.

    • I'm well out of warranty on this router. How do I get Netgear's attention and the possibility of trying a beta? I don't like rolling back to an older version with a security vulnerability.
    • Is the competition (especially TP-Link and Asus) markedly better with things of this sort? I'm kinda fed-up with Netgear creating problems like this, not giving any sort of announcement or work-around, not relasing a quick fix, etc. I've also had a couple of Netgear routers that just started polluting my network or acting funny after a few years. It is also annoying that I can't set my router to give out other DNS servers to DHCP clients - my only option is to set each client manually.

I have the same problems that people have been talking about.  And as time goes on, it seems to get worse and worse.  Big problem on purchasing and banking sites.

Also, I can't seem to stream music anymore.

I guess since Netgear won't fix the problem after all of these complaints, a new router is the only fix.  May get a different brand.  Any suggestions?  Link-Sys?   Asus?

Too bad, I've had Netgear routers for many years, and have not had this kind of problem before.  If Netgear doesn't respond to this very soon, they may lose the war...

guys I decided to buy a different brand router for christmas, I won't take a chance with netgear's updates..

this is a lot like apple releasing updates to slow down older models to sell new models

  • I have the same issue as everyone else that started right after the firmware upload to my router and my extender.      Have to load pages twice periodically and/or the page will re-load.   Windows 11 machine across all browsers.   Netgear needs to fix their latest firmware!

    • I don't think you're going to get a fix.  Like some of the others and myself, you'll probably have to get a different router to solve the problem

I do find it incredible and inexcusable that a 'communications' related company can issue defective updates for its products and then refuse to fix them, thus abandoning its user base like Netgear has.

        They deserve to go bankrupt.
