Remote Desktop Connections

Hello, I entered a post on 8/3/17 at 10:53am and not it is no longer available. I previously purchased a FVS318G and setup service with someone to install it. When the person came out to install it they stated that I needed another router which would be better for the business network using a CenturyLink C1000Z modem. So, I purchased a Nighthawk X8 AC5300. I ended setting it up myself because the person increased the hours and cost to do the install. I have it setup and working, however, I do not believe it is working correctly as I am unable to connect to my work computer from home. Can someone help with this problem? I have been trying to get this resolved as someone has been hacking into our network printer and sending pornographic pictures. This is the reason for purchasing the Netgear Router in the first place. I have been dealing with this problem for the past 6-7 months and really am tired of the whole thing.

  • Hello, I apologize for not responding to your post prior to now. However, I have been too busy with our business issues and have had very little extra time to do anything else. If you are able to make the trip to St Cloud and could email me at oifadultcare@aol.com, we can communicate further and probably work something out that may be satisfactory for your time. Are you interested? Thanks, Saundra

I think that I remember it, but I've lost it, too.  Perhaps a
moderator could discover what happened to it.

    > [...] I am unable to connect to my work computer from home. [...]

"I am unable" is not a useful problem description.  It does not say
what you did.  It does not say what happened when you did it.  Were you
trying to use Microsoft Remote Desktop "to connect to my work computer",
or some other method?  Did you get any error message(s)?

Where is the R8500 router, "home" or "work"?

The problem in most such situations lies in the router configuration
at the server end ("work"), not the client end ("home", where you are).
Your ("home") router should be perfectly happy to make an outgoing
connection to anything.  The "work" router needs to allow an incoming
connection, and to send it to the desired destination ("my work
    computer").

This generally means that the "work" router needs to do some port
forwarding, and that means that "my work computer" needs to have a
    reliable IP address.

On my D7000 (which may be similar), ADVANCED > Setup > LAN Setup :
Address Reservation gives you one way to arrange for a reliable IP
address for "my work computer".  Another is to configure the IP address
of the (unspecified) "my work computer" manually.

Once you know the address of the target computer, port forwarding is
arranged at ADVANCED > Advanced Setup > Port Forwarding / Port
Triggering.  Microsoft Remote Desktop normally uses port 3389.

More details are possible, but more information about your situation
would help.  (What equipment is where, are all the computers running
Windows, what "connect" means, and so on.)

Hi, I installed the Nighthawk R8500 at my busniess because someone hacked our network printer. Prior to installing the router I was able to login to my work computer from home. The business network ran using the CenturyLink C1000Z modem only, and everything worked fine. There is no standalone "Server" for the network. Logging into my work computer from home was not a problem.

After installing th Nighthawk R8500 and making sure all work computers and printers were working correctly with internet access, I tried logging in from home and am still unable to do so. The message I receive when trying to login is; "Remote Desktop can't connect to the remote comptuer for one of these reasons:1) Remote access to the server is not enabled 2) The remote computer is turned-off 3) The remote computer is not available on the network. Several computers and a network printer are plugged into the Nighthawk Router via Ethernet Cable. The computer I am trying to login to is always on as I sometimes work from home.

I have read the Nighthawk R8500 Manual and setup the port forwarding information, however, I am still unable to login from home. I tried the suggestion of checking to see if the port (3389) on my pc at work was open using the online port scanner link in my previous post (regarding the FVS315G router - not using this one at all) suggested by DaneA, and the scanner times out without getting a connection. I am not familiar with setting ports and this level of detail in networking. I really could use some help. Thanks

Interesting, but it doesn't tell me what configuration you did for
the port forwarding.  As I said, you need to arrange for the target PC
always to get the same IP address.  Then you need to arrange to forward
external port <some_port> to port 3389 on the PC's address.  From home,
you need to tell the  Microsoft Remote Desktop client to connect to
        <R8500_external_address>:<some_port> as the "PC name".

It's generally best to use a different external port from the
well-known one (3389) for a service like Microsoft Remote Desktop.  Many
simple-minded attack programs try the well-known port, and quit if it
doesn't work.  Using a non-default port makes it harder to guess the
        right port.

        > [...] FVS315G router [...]

Are you using more than one router?

As an example, here's what I did for a test:

                                  Service  External   Internal   Server
        #   Service Name          Type     Ports      Ports      IP Address
        16  win10 Remote Desktop  TCP/UDP  4389-4389  3389-3389  10.0.0.71

where my Windows target system was at 10.0.0.71:

You're not going to make me drive all the way from Saint Paul, are
        you?
