I just purchased a Netgear Nighthawk router. I then learned that the model is vulnerable to VNPFilter malware. I now wonder if I should look for a different router that would be more secure. I’d appreciate opinions. Thank you

Hi mslotnic,
Please be advised that NETGEAR is aware of a piece of malware called VPNFilter that might target some NETGEAR routers.
Here's a reference link for the Security Advisory for VPNFilter Malware on some Routers:
https://kb.netgear.com/000058814/Security-Advisory-for-VPNFilter-Malware-on-Some-Routers
I suggest to perform the recommended steps to protect against this possible malware.

Re: Should I install Netgear Smart WiFi A 2300 R7000P Router?
Thank you for your informative reply. I’m just wondering if Netgear is confident that the product is well, protected if the guidance is followed or, rather, if Netgear recommends an alternative Netgear router as less vulnerable.

Re: Should I install Netgear Smart WiFi A 2300 R7000P Router?
Hi mslotnic,
NETGEAR values the security of your network and we strongly suggest that you do the following as indicated on the KB link:
- Install latest firmware (1.3.1.26)
- Change default admin password
- Turn off Remote management
Rest assured that the team is doing an investigation and we will provide update once new information will be available.
