UPnP on or off ?

if u ask at security forums and almost every one says to turn it off for security reasons ok now but if u play games on xbox live and use the port forwarding every now an then the router gets confused and the game displays moderate nat even thos the router is already set for open nat why hasnt netgear fixed it ?

maybe i should try port triggering is that not broke?

some will say just turn on UPnP ya but what about every one out there that says not to cuz its bad to have it on what then ?

using
Firmware Version V1.0.3.80_1.1.38
  • If you can trust all the devices on your LAN, i.e. are sure that none will have any malware that could take advantage of UPnP then you can turn it on, one advantage of UPnP is that ports are only open when in use. Have you tried running with UPnP on, does it help?

  • I have had UPnP on with every firmware I have tested using the R7000 with 4 desktops, 2 laptops, 1 iphone, 1 android tablet, 1 ipad min, and 1 wireless printer that is hardwired into a switch (+1 other additional switch & an access point that is hard wired as a wireless range extender-all into the r7000) and have never had any issues with upnp.

I don't think I've been hacked & even if, I mean, it's like 7 terabytes of my wife's porn, anyways,

  • Sounds good to me...I don't use UPnP, so I always disable it. No reason to have it on, and there have been some weird little exploits using security holes relating to it in the past. So if I disable it, it's not something I have to consider if things go wrong.
  • However, if all I have in my network is some desktop PC's, a laptop and smartphones, and I am not into gaming, is there a reason NOT to disable UPnP?
  • I don't have an xbox but do have a ps4 and I see no reason why you shouldn't enable upnp. When the device is off the ports appear closed from the outside. No more dangerous than enabling pot forwarding. Just keep an eye on the upnp portmap table to make sure there are no other devices opening ports without your knowledge.

UPnP enabled yes xbox live works
  • I'm also playing on xbox live with this Router. UPnP doesn work correctly so I disabled it - also for security Reasons.

Only Port Forwarding (not Triggering) works good for me - so I enabled port Forwarding and all is running fine :)
