Why do we need to purchase the security package?
After one year, my router stopped working. It disconnects constantly. Support told me that I need to purchase either a three-year or five-year security upgrade? Is this normal or are they just up selling? That seems crazy that a modem would go bad after one year and instead of just downloading a firmware update, we need to purchase a security plan. Does anyone know anything about this? I purchased through Amazon and I left a one star review explaining this so that other customers know. This seems crazy.

You have been conned. That is balderdash.
As Kitsap says, you seem to have hit a scam site. Nothing to do with Netgear.
I hope you aren't one of those people who believes what Google tells them.

Not sure about the terminology you are using. You may have been in contact with a scam organization.
Netgear routers come with 90 days of free support after purchase. They also come with a one year warranty.
If you provided some details about your setup, there may be some assistance that can be provided here on the forum without charge.
Start with the model number of your router (look on the label plate after the words model number). If you can log in to the router user interface, provide the version number for the installed firmware. "The Latest" is not a version number.
It would be helpful to know the brand name and model number of the modem/ONT that is connected between your router and the internet.
"Stopped Working" is not a very detailed description of your issue. What task were you attempting? What happened that you did or did not expect?
