I did a bunch of googling already and couldn't find an answer. Most of the threads I found were for the r7000 when this ridiculous, "feature" was added through a firmware update. I followed a few of the guides on how to turn it off, but I'm missing the option that's supposed to be in the upgrade screen.
Is it still possible to turn it off?

What "data collection" do you have in mind?
Manuals are always a good place to start.
Visit the support pages:
Support | NETGEAR
Feed in your model number and check the documentation for your hardware.
I mention it because Netgear gave up on supplying paper manuals and CD versions some years ago and people sometimes miss the downloads.
I checked the manual, there's nothing in there. I've done some more digging and still haven't been able to find anything, so I'm just going to return the router. I'll just mark your post as the solution and close the thread out.
