RAX35 UNABLE to Connect to Router Setup

Nighthawk AX4 AX3000 4-Stream Wi-Fi Router MODEL: RAX35 (Dec 2019) / Firmware: v1.0.3.80-1.0.1

Gateway Modem: (AT&T U-verse) Pace Plc / Model 5031NV-030 / DSL (unfortantly it's all I can get where I live)

OS: Windows 10 / Edge Browser

Nighthawk Android App (Samsung Galaxy s10+)

PROBLEM: Router Wi-Fi stopped working a few months ago (just now having time to try and resolve) on all devises (Android phones, Amazon Kindal Fire, and Sony PS3). Unable to access Router setup page on PC (times out). Nighthawk App on Android phone says "Router Detected' / Cables Connected (checked) / 'Internet Not Connected'.

What I've tried: hard / power / cable rootboot on AT&T modem (unplugged all cables) for greater than 2 minutes, same on RAX35 Wi-Fi Router (unplugged all greater than 2 minutes), disconneted / powered off every wi-fi device (Galaxy s10+ phones, Amazon Kindle Fire tablets, sony PS3, and Dell Optplex 780 PC). Then reconnected only the phone (landline) data cable, broadband cable, PC ethernet cable, and power cable, then waited to all approprate LEDs were lit solid (Power, Service, Broadband, and Phone 1). Then plugged in ethernet cable to modem and RAX35 router. Then powered up router. I've done a factory reset on the RAX35 router. I've also tried all of the previous mentioned along with a 'Command Prompt' IPCONFIG/RELEASE, deleted PC Network setup, rebooted in sequence (AT&T modem, waited for solid LEDs, RAX35 Router, wiated for solid LEDs, PC, and the Galaxy s10+ phone). Still unable to get internet through Nighthawk App, still unable to access any RAX35 router setup page on PC (I've tried IP 10.0.0.1 , 10.0.0.2 , 10.0.0.3 ,192.168.1.0 , 192.168.1.1. , www.routerlogin.net , and www.routerlogin.com) NOTHING WORKS. I cannot get into any of the router setups to force an update to Firnmware (I know the latest avalable is v1.0.3.94_1.0.1). I did try plugging in my AT&T broadband cable directly into the RAX35 router's Internet Port, along with ethernet cable from PC into Router eithernet port and when I did I was able to access Router setup using Edge browser with url IP address = 10.0.0.1 However, it will not access the internet to update the firmware.

OTHER INFO: per my AT&T Gateway setup / system page (via IP address) the RAX35 router IP current address is 198.168.1.68. But still unable to access RAX35 setup using the 198.168.1.68 IP address (i've tried using Edge, IE, and Chrome browers).

HELP PLEASE

Re: RAX35 UNABLE to Connect to Router Setup

> Gateway Modem: (AT&T U-verse) Pace Plc / Model 5031NV-030 [...]

By default, that's a modem+router ("gateway"), not a simple "Modem".

> Nighthawk AX4 AX3000 4-Stream Wi-Fi Router MODEL: RAX35 [...]

RAX35[v1] or RAX35v2?  Look for "Model" on the product label.

How, exactly, is it connected to what, exactly?  (Hint: If a device
has different types of ports, then "connected to device" is not enough
detail.)  Cascading multiple routers can cause multiple problems.

Why?  Better wireless-network coverage, or some other reason?

> PROBLEM: Router Wi-Fi stopped working [...]

Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your model number, and look
for Documentation.  Get the User Manual (at least).  Read.  Look for the
LED descriptions and "Troubleshoot".  Pay particular attention to the
"WiFi LED" and "WiFi button".  Did you press it?  Further reading might
not hurt, either.

Or are wireless devices connecting to the router (which?), but not to
the Internet, or what, exactly?

> [...] Unable to access Router setup page on PC (times out). [...]

"Unable" is not a useful problem description.  It does not say
what you did.  It does not say what happened when you did it.  As usual,
showing actual actions (commands) with their actual results (error
messages, LED indicators, ...) can be more helpful than vague
descriptions or interpretations.

How is your (unspecified) "PC" connected to what?

If your computer is connected to the 5031NV LAN (wired or wireless),
and the RAX35 WAN/Internet port is connected to a 5031NV LAN Ethernet
port, then you could expect trouble accessing the RAX35 management web
site, because the RAX35 (in router mode) would see that as "remote
access" or "remote management", which, by default, is disabled.  Look
for "Manage remote access" in the RAX35 User Manual.  But see below.

> [...] Nighthawk App [...]

I'd avoid any Netgear-supplied app, and stick with a web browser.
Fewer complications, better visibility.

> [...] Then reconnected only the phone (landline) data cable, broadband
> cable, PC ethernet cable, and power cable, [...]

A typical cable here has two ends.  "reconnected [...] PC ethernet
cable" to _what_?

> [...] plugged in ethernet cable to modem and RAX35 router. [...]

   See "Hint: [...]", above.

> [...] NOTHING WORKS [...]

See "not a useful problem description [...]", above.

Assuming that the purpose of the RAX35 was better wireless-network
coverage, then you might want to configure it as a wireless access
point.  Look for "Set up the router as a WiFi access point" in the RAX35
User Manual.  At the very least, that should reduce the number of IP
address subnets with which you'll need to deal.

Re: RAX35 UNABLE to Connect to Router Setup

anitnode (Guru),

[By default, that's a modem+router ("gateway"), not a simple "Modem"]  You are correct, my AT&T is a Gateway modem / router, digital DSL that handles landline phone, broadband internet, router and wi-fi.

[RAX35[v1] or RAX35v2?] My Netgear Nighthawk router RAX35 product label does not show any version (v1 or v2), nor does any documentation that came with the router. I registered the router when I purchased it and MyNETGEAR product listing does not show version either. When I check available downloads by typing in model RAX35 it shows two listings, one does not include the version and the other includes v2. So I am thinking mind must be v1 by default.

[How, exactly, is it connected to what, exactly?] My orignal and current setup (it has not changed) is as follows...

AT&T Gateway:

  • Data Cable (as it is labled by AT&T) is connected from wall to Gateway port labeld 'PHONE LINES 1 & 2' (only have one phone)
  • Broadband from wall is connected to Gateway port labled DSL BROADBAND
  • Eithernet cable connected to Gateway port labled #1 EITHERNET HOME NETWORK... this is connected on other end to the RAX35 Router port labled 'INTERNET'
  • Eithernet cable connected to Gateway port labled #2 EITHERNET HOME NETWORK... this is connected on other end to my Dell Optiplex 780 PC Eithernet Input port (there is only one available)

My intent was to use the AT&T Gateway as both a modem and router (NOT Wi-Fi) for my PC and route internet to my Netgear Nighthawk RAX35 Router strickly for Wi-Fi (as RAX35 seams to provide better wireless coverage inside and outside home than using the AT&T Gateway for Wi-Fi).

The above setup worked with no issues from Dec 2019 until sometime in April 2021. There were the occassional outages (i.e. loss of power, or AT&T Network outage) that did require hardboot by disconnecting all cables, waiting, reconnecting in sequence. This always resovled any related issues. Note: the position / location of the RAX35has not changed either.

Most of the time there has been the one hard cable connection (PC as described above) to the AT&T Gateway and up to four wireless devices (two Samsung Galaxy s10+, two Kindle Fire tablets) connected to the RAX35 router. There have been times when family was visiting that there were up to 5-6 extra moble phones and an additional laptop connected to the RAX35 router wirelessly... a bit slow due to DSL but it all worked.

When the RAX35 wi-fi stopped working in April, to the best of my knowledge there were no buttons pushed on either the AT&T Gateway, nor the RAX35 router, no outages, no setup routines ran. There have only been one other person and myself in the house during this time.

When I say " Router Wi-Fi stopped working...", I mean it just stopped, first noticed I lossed Wi-Fi on my mobile phone. Then checked the other person's mobile phone and no wi-fi, then the Kindle Fires and no wi-fi. Did still have internet on PC (recall it is cable connected directly to the AT&T Gateway Eithernet port #2). At the time the loss of wirelss occured, I unplugged all cables from both AT&T Gateway and RAX35 router and reconnected all back in the proper sequence / waiting times as I have done several times with no issues since Dec 2019 as mentioned above. It did not resolve the problem. I tried several more times to insurre no mistakes made and still no wi-fi. I decided to unplug the RAX35 and remove the connection from the RAX35 to the AT&T Gateway on both ends. Accessed the AT&T Gateway setup / maintenance page using the IP address in Edge browser URL and turn on the wi-fi. No issues, though I lost some wireless range / coverage / distance (mostly outside).

Just this week I've had some time to try and trouble shoot. I first turned off the AT&T wi-fi option (via the AT&T Gateway setup / maintenance page). Then connected the eithernet cable from Gateway Eithernet port #1 to RAX35 Internet port and powered up the RAX35 router... no wi-fi. I then unplugged all cables from both Gateway and RAX35 router, reconnected, etc (same as was successfull many times prior).

I have downloaded the RAX35 manual and trouble shooted with no resolution. I've followed several other resolution insturctions on the Netgear Community page. I have troubleshooted using AT&T trouble shooting with no resolution.

Currently the RAX35 LEDs that are solid are... POWER, INTERNET, 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, 5GHz Wi-Fi, WI-FI RADIO, and the WPS.

<Unable to access Router setup page on PC (times out). [...]> ... I have no reason to doubt you when you say...

[If your computer is connected to the 5031NV LAN (wired or wireless),
and the RAX35 WAN/Internet port is connected to a 5031NV LAN Ethernet
port, then you could expect trouble accessing the RAX35 management web
site, because the RAX35 (in router mode) would see that as "remote
access" or "remote management", which, by default, is disabled.]

I will, as you suggested... [Look for "Manage remote access" in the RAX35 User Manual]

Regarding the Netgear Nighthawk App... you say [I'd avoid any Netgear-supplied app, and stick with a web browser.
Fewer complications, better visibility.]

Netgear states to use webpages WWW.ROUTERLOGIN.NET or .COM but they don't work... see below (maybe because as you suggested "remote access issues"...) However, Netgear also states under their Knowledge Base and trouble shooting these ROUTERLOGIN pages to use the NIGHTHAWK APP.

When I type in www.routerlogin.net in browser url I get directed to... Router Login (netgear.com) which states...

'You may not be connected to your Router’s WiFi network. To access routerlogin.com, your device must be connected to your Router’s WiFi network. Check your current connection and try again.

The easiest way to manage your router's settings and wireless network is the Nighthawk app. You can use the Nighthawk app to update your router's firmware or check the speed of your network.

To download the app, visit nighthawkapp.com.'

It also gives this link... https://kb.netgear.com/27199/I-can-t-access-my-router-what-do-I-do

I have followed these instrunctions too... which ended up with a recommendation to perform a factory reset... after the factory reset it says to access router by using browser and IP 198.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 ... both result in a timeout 'Hmmm... can't reach this page 192.168.1.1 took too long to respond'

Since Netgear recommends using the NIGHTHAWK APP.. I tried and get result of 'SSID (my preset WIFI Network Name) Connected without Internet'. This occurs on both mobile phones and Kindle Fires.

THANKS for you help.

   Yup.

Ok. In that case (connecting client devices to both the 5031NV and
the RAX35), it would make sense to configure the RAX35 as a WAP.  That
should put all your client devices on one LAN subnet, determined by the
5031NV, apparently "198.168.1.*".

It's possible that when you first connected the RAX35 to the 5031NV,
the RAX35 set-up wizard decided on its own to do that.  Since then,
something could have happened to put the RAX35 back into its default
full-function-router mode, which would account for those "10.0.0.x" IP
addresses.

> [...] to the best of my knowledge there were no buttons pushed on

Hard to tell from here, but regardless how it got this way, I claim
that you want to configure the RAX35 as a WAP.  (Which it seems not to
be now.)

> [...] Accessed the AT&T Gateway setup / maintenance page using the IP
> address [...]

   What was that IP address?

> Netgear states to use webpages WWW.ROUTERLOGIN.NET or .COM but they
> don't work... [...]

They normally do, but only from the LAN side of the RAX35.

> 'You may not be connected to your Router's WiFi network. [...]

Welcome to what may be the worst error message in the world.  For an
explanation, try:

      https://community.netgear.com/t5/x/x/m-p/1365830

Briefly, the idea is that "[www.]routerlogin.net" (or ".com") should
point to your own router, but that's true only if you use your own
router for DNS name resolution.  (Or, if the Netgear router can
intercept your DNS queries.)  Regardless, you should be able to get to
the thing using its IP address, if you can determine (or guess) that.

Normally, that would be something like "192.168.1.1" (for a plain
router) or "192.168.0.1" (for a modem+router), but it could be
different.  ("10.0.0.1" is a typical alternate, for example.)

A new complication arises if your web browser uses "DNS over HTTPS"
(and some real-world DNS server directly).  In that case, those
"routerlogin" names will typically take you to that misleading/useless
Netgear error page.  Specifying the IP address (instead of a
"routerlogin" name) should work, but there are some exotic cases where
you might need to disable "DNS over HTTPS" in your browser.

In your case, with a computer which is connected directly to your
non-Netgear modem+router, those "routerlogin" names will take you to
that misleading/useless error page.

   I would:

Disconnect the RAX35 from everything except its power adapter, and do
a settings reset.  When it recovers, connect a computer to it.  Ideally,
using Ethernet, but a wireless connection should work, too.

Your computer should get an IP address like "192.168.1.x" (x = 2?),
and the RAX35 (LAN interface) should be at "192.168.1.1".  Use that
address or one of the "routerlogin" names in your web browser.

Fight your way past the set-up wizard, and, at your earliest
opportunity, do that "Set up the router as a WiFi access point" thing.
That should make the RAX35 too stupid to be used on its own, so you'll
need to connect its WAN/Internet port to a LAN Ethernet port on your
main router (5031NV).

At that point, you should be able to connect a computer to either the
RAX35 or the 5031NV, and get normal operation.

The RAX35-as-WAP will, by default, get a new LAN IP address for
itself from your main router (DHCP server), using DHCP.  You'll need to
ask the 5031NV about its "connected devices" or "DHCP clients", or some
such thing, to learn which address it gave to the RAX35-as-WAP.

When you know that address, you should be able to point a web browser
at it, from anyplace on your LAN, and get to the management web site of
the RAX35-as-WAP.  For greater convenience, you should reserve some
memorable IP address for the RAX35-as-WAP on your main router (DHCP
server), so that you'll be able to find the RAX35-as-WAP without slways
having to ask the main router where it is today.  How you do that on an
5031NV, I don't know.

Unless you wanted to use the default wireless SSID(s) and passphrase
on the RAX35, you'll want to configure those as you like.  When you get
all its settings right, save them.  Look for "Manage the router
configuration file" in the User Manual.

   What could go wrong?
