The only thing that I have been able to research is that every 24hrs the lease expires on your device from the router, which means that your device asks the router to stay connected for another 24 hrs. When the time expires, a new IP address has to be assigne to the device, but usually it keep the same address. For my case, the router IP address is 192.168.1.1 which is very common and it should assign an IP address to your device like 192.168.1.25. What I have noticed is that the router assigns an IP address of 169.254.7.7 or some real strange number and then makes all your devices saty offline because it doesn't keep the same IP address structure. You can try this by connecting to your 2.4GHZ band and then trying the 5GHZ (or viceversa) and see what IP address is assigned. One way to get around this (for some devices) is to assign your device a static IP. Not all devices let you do this but if you are stuck with this router this is the only thing that has worked for me. I agree with all the previous posts. Give it back. I have tried other brand routers and havent been able to find the same quality as netgear. I will defenitely not recommend any Netgear AX router to anyone. But for the time being buy yourself a negear x4s or x6s for much cheaper. You will get the same speeds on 5GHZ since we are only up to 1Gig.

Been failry solid for a few months now. Still on the older Firmware. I haven't touched it. I believe I did reboot it at least 1 time in the last few months. other than that. I have left it alone as a WiFi access point only. No LAN connections, separate WiFi for 2.5 and 5Ghz as I have always had. Seems to be fairly stable on this firmware for me.
My only suggestion would be to revert back to factory settings. Manually update the firmware before putting anything on it (settings, specific IP ranges, security, etc). test it out with factory only settings and say current firmware for a week. See if it just works not connected to anything. Then bring it over to your network.
this is a very finicky router to say the least. But, I think it "can" work. Just like a really fragile piece of glass work, but not be a total paper weight. :(

RAX 35 ax6 Router.. You know, Im going to try to assign my desktop a static IP address to resolve my issue... heres why. Ive had this router since january, multiple tech tickets and wasted time on calls, received a " new " router and returned the old to netgear..... problems persist ( dropping 2.4 and 5G signals intermittently ) but the strangest issue is: the only device I have hardwired is my desktop, if I turn the desktop off at night, EVERY morning the network is down , wireless and wired. Power cycle the router to bring back up, I havent check to see if its issuing a Link Local address ( 169.254..) but its beyond frustrating and makes no sense at all. I will try this tonight and get back to you, your post is the only thing ive seen that is even is the ballpark with my issue... netgear is useless... about to switch back to ASUS or TP LINK when my patience with this is depleted. Side note * I updated with both routers, out of the box, to the only updated firmware ver. available... perhaps a mistake?? cant downgrade to test.
- gg15May 20, 2020GuideI tried that also with assigning an IP in AP mode. Didn’t work. You need to do router mode and then do whatever you want after that. Anything in AP mode will show promise for an hour or so and then take a crap. Don’t waste your time. I wasted a good two weeks.

I've owned mine for a year, wifi drops-Tvs, phones, laptops, can reboot and it settles down, but will return. Basically, you turn off AX and SmartConnect and the wifi is stable. These tech features don't work on this model with my equipment. I have a copier connected wifi and it keeps a message log of what is happening, every hour the wifi would drop, re-join, go for 45min to an hour and drop and rejoin. I really believe the router decides to swap 5g-2.4g constantly. Figures since turning the smartconnect off resolves the issues.
I really believe Netgear has become the microsoft of the industry...push out a product to say your first at this tech, but that may not work and rely on firmware/software to fix. They have been unable to fix on this one.
- 2l82xlr8Oct 16, 2020TutorI have found the issue is the latest firmware.
When I install the firmware prior to it, NO DROPOUT.
Keeping it that way until NETGEAR gets their **bleep** together!!! - MarcB44Nov 19, 2020Aspirant
Just bought the AX8...at first start I've accepted the suggested firmware upgrade
I configure it as an Access Point and activate smartconnect with same SSID for 2.4 and 5.0GHz Wifi...
Wifi is unstable on my macbook pro, it drops, it come back, 2 minutes later it drops again and so on...
It's like buying a car with a motor that stops every miles...
Any tech expert here ? Should I send back this piece of xxxxxx ?
- GabboCHNov 19, 2020ApprenticeIf you read the other posts there are some thing to try which work for some people but not for others.
Most of these issues involved turning off function you paid for, SmartConnect, AX etc
I recommend to send it back if you can.
The same issues have been present for many users for more than 1 year & there is no response from Netgear at all. - MarcB44Nov 19, 2020Aspirant
Seems you're right, but it is unbelievable...
My firmware is V1.0.3.102_1.0.48 (the latest I guess)
is it the same with all Netgear AX router ?
is the "reconnexion" by design with AX ?
which cheaper router should give the same power and antenna quality to cover a big house in 2.4 GHz ?
- GabboCHNov 19, 2020ApprenticeSome of The other RAX line use a different chipset so I guess should perform differently than the RAX80.
However there are similar reports of problems with the rax120 for example.
I am using a EX8000 (tri band) Wi-Fi 5 access point instead of the RAX80 and have similar coverage and zero problems, but I have no Wi-Fi 6 capable devices. It is 100€ instead of 300€..!
Several others commented that other Wi-Fi 6 manufacturers like ASUS are not without their issues too, so for me going down the Wi-Fi 6 is a bit of a gamble still as the technology is new.
If you read all the reviews these days, everyone just says "this router is amazing". You will struggle to find anyone saying any product is bad these days, even bigger channels or magazines.
I decided to invest in a strong Wi-Fi 5 router for now until the new standard is better understood & products improve. - 2l82xlr8Nov 19, 2020TutorFigured out the issue!
Turned off Smart Connect, and set up wifi according to IPhone preferred settings... and NO MORE DROP OUTS!!!
Thanks to a Saavy APPLE TECH... - MarcB44Nov 19, 2020Aspirant
Great but what's are "iPhone preferred settings" ?

Don't foget
You are here because your setup was not working correctly according to what the manufacturer made you believe...troublefree wifi 6 capability, wonderful wifi/lan peace and unity.
In reality your city was burned.
If you turn these super expensive fuctions you bought the router for, all is well. Its a no brainer according to netgear.
- GabboCHNov 19, 2020ApprenticeExactly, if you have to turn off smart connect for the device to work correctly, it is a work around not a solution.
I have smart connect enabled on my EX8000 and it works without issues.
The same for my ISP non branded router.
Smart Connect is not a new feature, I've had it for the last 5 year's and it works flawlessly.
Its just one of multiple things the doesn't work properly in the Netgear RAX80.
