Switch limiting to 100Mbps

Hi,

I bought my router a few years ago, I've used it in several places in the house. However only today did I actually check the download speed through the switch. From my PC I can connect directly into the switch on my internet box, or I can connect through the RAX120. The RAX120 is connected directly to the internet box.

The internet box offers a selection of dynamically generated files to help test internal network performance. When my PC is connected directly to the box, windows reports transfer speeds of 900Mbps. When connected via the RAX120 the speed is limited to 90Mbps. Windows reports the link speed as 1000 Mbps.

I've tried plugging the ethernet patch cables into different ports on the switch, including the "multi-gig" connecter, no difference. I don't use the "wan" connector on the RAX120 - router mode.

I've applied the latest firmware, RAX120v2v1-V1.2.9.52.

Is there any way to monitor the ports of the switch to understand what's happeing?

Anyone else have a similar problem?

Thanks,

GexBox

The RAX120 has 4 ethernet ports in a line at the back. This set of ports is referred to as a switch. In the old days it would have been a hub. In the case of a hub all ethernet frames received on one port are rebroadcast on all the other ports.

Today you only have a switch. A switch learns what MAC addresses are connected to each port and only sends the ethernet frame to the port where the destination MAC address has been detected.

Broadcast frames are still forwarded to all the ports.

        Never seen that terminology before.

If you want to know what is going on with the router's LAN ports – a more familiar description if this hardware – then check the status in the router itself.

    What's the RSD120 ? What's the Internet box?

I don't use the "wan" connector on the RAX120 - router mode.

That connection usually goes to whatever connects you to the Internet.

  • What is the brand and model of the ethernet adapter in the PC?

What is the Mfr and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?
Be sure your using a good quality LAN cable between the modem and router. CAT6A STP is recommended.

What is the connection rate seen on routers WEB UI under Advanced tab/Show Stats for the WAN port and where your ethernet connected PC is on the LAN port in back of the router? Should show 1000Mpbs for both.

I don't use the WAN port as I don't want NAT. I want my printer to be able to scan to my PC over the network, and its behind the RAX120 router.

How can the WAN port be better suited to 1Gbps networking than the multi-gig port?

As I said, the problem is independent of the router or the PC, since in a direct connection between the 2 there is no problem. A recent PC in the same room experiences the same behaviour.

Does anyone have 1Gbps networking happening over the 4 ethernet ports at the back of the RAX120?

Please give feedback to the following:

Be sure your using a good quality LAN cable between the modem and router. CAT6A STP is recommended.

What is the connection rate seen on routers WEB UI under Advanced tab/Show Stats for the LAN port 5 which is the MG Port and where your ethernet connected PC is on the LAN port in back of the router? Should show 1000Mpbs for both.

Also connect the ISP modem/ONT to the yellow WAN port to see the connection rate here as well. Please post this rate. Should be 1000Mpbs.

How is the RAX configured for Internet? Using the MG port?

Yes BOTH WAN and MG ports will give near 900Mpbs to the LAN Ports in back if there is no problems from the ISP modem, Cabling and PC.
