Why do I need an account to configure my router?

Why in the absolute heck am I being told I need to have a NETGEAR account in order to access the management portal (192.168.1.1) for my router? This is absolutely ridiculous to me.
On top of that, I can't even log in with a throwaway account that I created. For over a day straight I get 'Something went wrong, please try again' over and over and over, even after restarting the router multiple times.
I honestly cannot think of a single reason for why I'd need to register an account in order to admin my own networking equipment. Hoping someone can walk me through a way to completely disable these bs prompts, thanks.

Disconnect the router from the ISP modem.
Factory reset the router and setup from scratch with a ethernet connected PC to the back of the router:

Once setup, connect the router to the ISP modem.

Re: Why do I need an account to configure my router?
Direct from fiber > ethernet converter, no modem. Why is the 'default' configuration this bull**bleep** web registration process instead of being optional for people who don't manually configure? I hate it.

Re: Why do I need an account to configure my router?
It ended up eventually just automatically bypassing the registration / login after failing ('Something went wrong' spam) about 12 times. I understand wanting to make the process more user-friendly for people who want to plug it in and have an app do everything, but they've made everything a lot more convoluted and unnecessarily obtuse, especially when the app / registration just doesn't work at all. Thanks for the follow-up.

Re: Why do I need an account to configure my router?
The seems to be a bug in current version of FW that causes this. All that was needed was to disconnect the router from the ISP services, factory reset and setup from scratch with out it connected, once at the home screen, then connect up the router to the ISP sevices.
Glad you got it working. Please mark your thread as solved so others will know. Be sure to save off a back up configuration to file for safe keeping. Saves time if a reset is needed.
