RBR850 blocking certain websites

Hi, fellow Orbians!

I had an older Orbi system (AX4200) and was gifted this RBR850 (AX6000) kit. It was fully installed and going about our business until I wanted to source parts to build a chicken coop. For some reason, neither Lowes nor Home Depot's site would load and appeared blocked.

kskreider_0-1713035370599.png

I got baffled and wondered if it was the internal network so I turned on my VPN and sure enough, the Home Depot site fired right up!

So I do a bit of googlin' and find This Fix on this Netgear support site. It did not work

I saw someone suggest changing DNS servers, and I have tried them all, but currently set to 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4, changing them between top DNS providers made no difference.

Someone suggested to add a Block Services setup for HTTPS but that did not work either.

I saw someone suggest attaching the router's MAC address and I tried that but it did not work. I looked closer and it turned out that ORBI was pre-filling in the MAC address but the last digit was an "E" instead of an "F".

I rebooted the modem and the router and pow! Home Depot and Lowes both work fine now

So I go to watch a baseball game and MLB.tv now gives me this error:

mlb.mlb.com does not support HTTPS requests

kskreider_0-1713057920198.png

Some of these sites I hit now don't error like like they did before but now it will be a blank landing page. For example "homedepot.com/lander" (not a real site just an example)

Does anyone have any help or suggestions here?

I am using:

Netgear Nighthawk CM-1100 modem

Orbi RBR-850 Router (Firmware Version V7.2.6.31_5.0.24)

Thank you in advance!

Re: RBR850 blocking certain websites

Amazing how people don't want to listen.

Worth reading:

Potentially related:

Part 2 should be easy to answer (unless the recent user which got the same public IP address triggered this)

Part 3 might be caused by malware or similar.

You won't get anywhere wasting Comcast/Xfinity helpdesk resources.

Re: RBR850 blocking certain websites

Has a factory reset and setup from scratch been performed since last FW update? A complete pull of the power adapters for a period of time after the factory reset then walk thru the setup wizard and setup from scratch with a wired PC and web browser. https://kb.netgear.com/22697/How-do-I-install-my-NETGEAR-router-using-the-router-web-interface

Try disabling the following and see:
Armor, Smart Parental Controls or Circle, Traffic Meter.

Re: RBR850 blocking certain websites

Thank you for your reply!

I loaded the updated firmware last night thinking that would provide a fix.

This morning I tried to put it into AP mode before realizing I should have only done that if double NAT was the issue and my modem is a modem only, not a combo gateway. I tried to connect the router directly to my PC with a ethernet cable and nothing could see it. Since I fully lost access I did a hard reset from scratch. Part of my problem MAY BE that I loaded my saved config file and brought a bad setting(s) along for the ride)

I'll check Armor, Smart Parental Controls, and Circle. I am positive the traffic meter is disabled.

It sounds like I really need to do another full-blown reset from scratch and do a complete re-configuration. I will do that late at night once everyone is in bed and report back.

Try a different browser and device as well to test that web site.

Re: RBR850 blocking certain websites

Oh it's across multiple devices and browsers. I mentioned to my wife that there was a strange network issue blocking Home Depot's site and she mentioned some sites she frequents are now blocked too.

I feel the problem is a https issue and that some sites are not handling odd Orbi requests properly. (Is that a thing?)

Extreme unlikely we're facing a router issue here - this message does come from edgesuite.net, the Akamai Technologies content delivery network (CDN) blocking the public IP address you presenting there, this is typically the public IP address assigned to your Internet connection, and finally your router WAN/Internet port.

Very likely your ISP does dynamically assign typically changing IP addresses - so Akamai does no longer block your connection.

This URL does neither connect by http nor by https. So completely unclear from where you have got that URL.

Nothing wrong with any troubleshooting and enhancements you applied to your Orbi config - good job!

Re: RBR850 blocking certain websites

Well, I thought I had fixed it with the MAC address error since Home Depot was accessible again, however I just went to pay a bill and got the same error on the Macy's website. I tried Home Depot again and it's blocked again too.

I did not do the clean sweep reset last night like I said I would so I'll still have to try that, I guess.

Do others have problems with their RBR850? Maybe I should just swap this one out?

Re: RBR850 blocking certain websites

If you turn off the CM modem and RBR, then disconnect the RBR from the CM modem, connect up this one ethernet connected PC to the back of CM modem, power ON the CM modem, give about 2 minutes, can you access these web sites that have been giving problems?

Please post a copy and paste of the modems connection status and event log page.

Re: RBR850 blocking certain websites

OK, something really strange is going on.

I did exactly what you told me to, the steps, in order and followed the instructions for the link. My PC is currently connected directly to the CM.

I could not get the modem to connect so I reset the static IP address on my workstation and rebooted. I could not initially get to 192.168.100.1 but it would not let me log in. I had to RESET the modem. Once I did I was able to get to sites like Facebook or CNN but not much else. It took about 10 tries to get to this post. The modem's admin console keeps resetting itself and asking me to log in again. After about 5 or 6 logins I got this:

kskreider_0-1713134092044.png

Now about 5 minutes in it seems like I can get to Home Depot, Macy's, and the other problematic sites just fine.

Here is the current event log (which probably reset when I hard reset the modem):

Re: RBR850 blocking certain websites

Need the cable connections data page as well.

Please repost a event log too as to see if any more events are seen.

Any Criticals, Errors or Warnings seen in the event logs needs to be reviewed and resolved by the ISP. Indicates a signal issue on the ISP line up to the modem.

IF you can get to the problemactic sites, then seem to be something on the RBR thats is blocking something. Lets check the modems cable connections data first.

Be sure that you reset the RBR and Setup from scratch:

use the ERASE button on the routers web page to factory reset the router:
https://kb.netgear.com/000062081/How-do-I-erase-the-configuration-settings-on-my-Orbi-WiFi-System

Walk thru the setup routine with a wired PC:

https://kb.netgear.com/22697/How-do-I-install-my-NETGEAR-router-using-the-router-web-interface

Can follow this process as well:

https://community.netgear.com/t5/Orbi-WIFI-6-AX-AND-Wi-Fi-6E-AXE/Procedure-for-Factory-reset-of-RBS8...

Be sure to not use Orbi app and Don't enable any Armor, Smart Parental controls or Traffic Meter for now.

Re: RBR850 blocking certain websites

Ok, cable connections page looks good.

However, still event logs show critical. Any Criticals, Errors or Warnings seen in the event logs needs to be reviewed and resolved by the ISP. Indicates a signal issue on the ISP line up to the modem.

After you factory reset and setup from scratch, Try inputting some custom DNS addresses in on the RBRs web page under Advanced Tab/Setup/Internet. Try Cloudfare or Quad9 addresses here.

Re: RBR850 blocking certain websites

OK, update. The full reset seemed to work well. Everything was fine last night and up until about a half hour ago using Google DNS. I tried Tractor Supply website and got the same edgesuite.net error again. Home Depot works fine though. I switched to Cloudfare and no go. I turned my VPN on and dammit it works fine.

What is the problem with this thing? Do you really think that random sites are blocking Orbi because of critical errors coming from the line up to the modem? This is kind of absurd for how much this setup costs. Is this common? should I return it and just go back to my old ax4200 system?

Wrong question, Sir! You still don't want to understand these messages are coming on your working Internet connection - from the Akamai CDN front-end - in reply to a connection attempt to a Web server - neither from the your your cable modem nor from your RBR850?

Randomly changing the DNS servers you are querying don't make much difference.

Your VPN connection is using the same cable modem, the same router, the same Internet connection, isn't it? With the VPN enabled, the Akamai CDN does no longer "see" a direct connection from your Internet address (IPv4 or IPv6), thus - whatever is blocking your access attempts there - the connection does succeed.

Start with reading What is a CDN - you should see (and become able to understand) where the messages you still think come from the Netgear router (or the cable modem) are coming in fact from the Akamai CDN Edge Server(s). You would not get them if the Netgear router would cause whatever blocks in your Internet connection data path

Re: RBR850 blocking certain websites

The operators of these big Web sites you try to access without success can translate these error strings https://techdocs.akamai.com/edge-diagnostics/docs/translate-error-string for troubleshooting on the Akamai Control Center https://control.akamai.com/ - normal users can't, because they don't have access.

Re: RBR850 blocking certain websites

I would have the ISP check in to those Criticals just to be sure.

Is IPv6 enabled or disabled on the RBR? I would disable it if it is enabled.

Seems odd why your seeing this issue with the 850 series in play and don't with VPN or direct to cable modem.

And this happens across all devices and different web browsers?

I just took my 850 series off line after testing new FW. Working great here.

So you have a Orbi 750 series? Same FW version or what's on it currently?

Re: RBR850 blocking certain websites

No IPV6. I never have. Yes, I have an RBR750 + 2 satellites, I upgraded to the RBR 850 + two satellites. The RBR850 was a gift so I was going to set up the RBR750 for my elderly mother's house. I have to wait now.

I will call Xfinity and ask them about the line criticals.

I not only really appreciate your help FURRYe38 but how fast you reply! Thank you!

Re: RBR850 blocking certain websites

K, Something to put on is the RBR750 and test it out and see if same thing happens.

What FW version is on this 750?

If things work ok on the 750, need to figure out whats going on with the 850 if this maybe causing problems.

Re: RBR850 blocking certain websites

I will try to put the RBR750 back into place tonight and test it out. In the meantime I have called Xfinity and they will come out tomorrow for some line tests.

While I was chatting with the agent I noticed the other sites, like HOme Depot and Macy's are failing again not too.

Such an odd phenomenon.
