The post provides no context. There is no specific problem description.

In general, the vast majority of "Internet of Things" (IoT) devices:

  • Are built with the most inexpensive WiFi chip sets, which support only 2.4G WiFi.
  • Require a tiny amount of data bandwidth ("turn on", "turn off", etc.), so they present almost zero load on a WiFi network.
  • Benefit from the fact that 2.4G WiFi has a greater range than 5G (or 6G) WiFi, and thus the devices can be located farther from the WiFi access point and still function.

Because of this, these devices often include warnings in BIG BOLD TYPE, "Must have 2.4G WiFi". This is

  • A simple fact.  If the user has no 2.4G WiFi, the device can have no network connection.  This is like a product saying, "requires (2) AA batteries".  If the user has a drawer full of C cells, D cells, 9-volts, and a car battery, but no AA cells, then the device cannot work.
  • Often a worry to customers, who panic because their WiFi system (from Google, Asus, TP-Link, Netgear... etc. has a combination of 2.4G and 5G WiFi.  OMG!!!!!  The device will get confused!!!  Not true.  The device cannot detect anything besides 2.4G WiFi.  It cannot be distracted by AM radio, color television, or 5G WiFi because the tiny radio chip in the device works only with 2.4G WiFi.

Most IoT devices can be set up using the smart phone app.  (probably 98% of them... or higher)  Just follow the directions.

There are a very few IoT devices where the smart phone app is poorly written.  In a misguided attempt to prevent problems, the program detects that the smart phone is connected to WiFi at 5G and refuses to proceed.  The best thing to do in this situation is return the product and purchase something that has a good smart phone app. (Usually from a major brand.)

If following the directions does not work, then it would be helpful to know:

  • What specific device cannot be set up.
  • At what point during the setup does an error occur. (screen capture if possible)
