multi device displayed but only one router and two satellites are connected.

hi everyone,

recently on the orbi admin page, I started seeing lots of devices that are offline (like 98 devices ) but on the HOME page, it still shows correctly -

Attached Devices (RBS760)

Router - 1
Connected Satellites - 2

please let me know if you have any solutions for this. thanks.

What is the problem?

Your router seems to be behaving as designed.

It has remembered devices that were once connected to it. That helps the router to pickup where it left off when these devices try to connect again.

If you don't want to see them, you can clear that list.

Visit the support pages:

Support | NETGEAR

Feed in your model number and check the documentation for your hardware.

Check the section in the manual Manage network access control lists.

While many questions about routers are generic and could be answered anywhere, some things need specialist knowledge.

If you have more problems with your RBR760, you might get more help, and find earlier questions and answers specific to your device, in the appropriate section for your hardware. That's probably here:

Orbi WiFi 6 (AX) and WiFi 6E (AXE) - NETGEAR Communities

Re: multi device displayed but only one router and two satellites are connected.

What Firmware version is currently loaded?

Has a factory reset and setup from scratch been performed since last FW update?

What is the size of your home? Sq Ft?
What is the distance between the router and 📡 satellite(s)? 30 feet or more is recommended in between RBR and RBS📡 to begin with depending upon building materials when wirelessly connected.

Try a different web browser?

May need to factory reset and setup from scratch.

Re: multi device displayed but only one router and two satellites are connected.

thanks for your reply. the problem is, we never had 98 devices connected. we had only 1 router and 2 satellites always and this has been an issue only for the past week or so and not been able to figure out what changed since we didn't do any update on the firmware or anything as such.

it's more than 30 FT btw each device. I don't want to factory reset, that's not the solution for this, then I have to work on the setup for everything- which I hate 🙂  there is no FW update last I checked for the model we have.

Re: multi device displayed but only one router and two satellites are connected.

Router Firmware VersionV6.3.1.0_1.1.41

1000 block by block, so the router is one and the other two satellites in another block.

totally 3000 to 3500

Re: multi device displayed but only one router and two satellites are connected.

I would probably update the system FW:

https://community.netgear.com/t5/Orbi-WiFi-6-AX-and-WiFi-6E-AXE/RBR760-RBS760-Firmware-Version-6-3-2...

Update the RBS first then RBR lastly. Power OFF the RBS and RBR for 1 minutes then back ON with the RBR first then RBS.
If this doesn't clear the phantom devices, factory reset and setup from scratch.

For that size of home, the RBR and 1 RBS would be needed. Or turn down the power on the RBR to 50 or 25%.

Thanks for attaching the picture.  What happens when you click the "Remove" button by each of the Disconnected satellites?

Do they disappear, only to return?

p.s. I'm assuming that the column with MAC addresses was blocked out.  Is there a pattern in those MAC addresses?

Good call. Are you thinking that all those entries might be the same things in different guises?

Phones that use a random Mac address – think iPhones and Samsungs – might create that behaviour. Each visit of the same phone could add yet another entry.

If that is the case, then we have yet another manifestation of this "security" feature.

If the devices showed up on the Access Control page list of devices that are no longer connected, that would suggest some version of MAC manipulation over time.  The regular Attached Devices page displays only devices that are currently connected. For satellites, however, it seems to remember satellites that were part of the network at some time and have become disconnected.  I struggle to come up with a scenario that would have 98 devices recognized as satellites but not having a recognizable Netgear MAC address.

Although a Factory Rest is the "Last Resort", some things should be kept in mind:

  • A Factory Reset with restoring the configuration can take under 10 minutes.
    • Save a copy of the configuration.
    • Do the Factory Reset (using paperclip or the web "Erase Settings" option).
    • During the configuration, do not change any settings and plow through the menus until you come to a page where you have an option to:
      • Restore a saved configuration, or
      • Manually configure
    • At that point, upload the saved configuration.  The router will then reboot and have the original WiFi SSID/password.
    • All the devices which have been waiting for WiFi to reappear will connect.
    • Many times, the problem lies not with the parameters, but with some internal table which is corrupted.  In this case, "Voila. problem solved!"
  • Even a configuration from scratch does not require a visit to every WiFi device.  Use the exact same WiFi credentials and every device will reconnect automatically.  (I have kept the same WiFi credentials since about 2005, through any number of WiFi routers.)
  • If there are extensive custom settings (reserved IPs, custom names, OpenVPN, ports forwarded, etc. etc.) then my practice is to do all that before changing the WiFi SSID/password.  Once the WiFi credentials are set, all those devices will begin to connect and get whatever IP address the router gives them.

That's my thinking following your comment.

If @KingsClass can tell us what those wifi client are that might help.

It is easy to see how something with an ever changing mac address can rack up a huge number of entries.

Maybe those 98 devices are not satellites but the same phone that signed in 98 times.

Never seen reports of that here before. But maybe no one has been looking .
