Can't get Orbi RBR50 and Wake On Lan to work

I'm running Orbi RBR50 and RBS50 satellites at home.

RBR50 is running in router mode.

I'm trying to use a master machine (Windows 10 machine) to wake up other machines on the same subnet.  The master machine does that by using free WOL utilities (such as nirsoft).

Machines are all attached to a 8-port Netgear switch which is then connected to one of the RBR50 LAN port in the back.

I've checked the destination machine's BIOS, Windows Network Adapter settings, IP address, MAC address and all things checked out but no luck in waking the machine.

Another machine that I am trying to wake is a Synology NAS.  The Synology has even simpler settings to enable WOL.  But I have also no luck with the Synology.

What am I doing wrong?

Any help much appreciated.

Thank you!

  • Did I read the description correctly that both the Master Windows 10 machine and the destination devices are connected to the same switch?

If they are, that would seem to indicate the issue is not related to the router.

Another way to determine whether the router is part of the problem is to substitute a different router as a test.  I keep the previous WiFi router when I upgrade (in case I want to "go back").

The Wikipedia article on Wake on LAN recommends packet capture to verify the contents of the magic packet.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wake-on-LAN#:~:text=Wake-on-LAN%20(WoL,awakened%20by%20a%20network%20message.

(The article also lists a number of factors which make WOL difficult to implement.)

The way I read the article indicates that WOL should work without any router.  i.e. connect the master and destination machines with an Ethernet cable. no switch, no router.  just a cable.  Set a static IP address on each machine and see what happens.
