How to disable auto upgrade?

As mentioned in this topic: https://community.netgear.com/t5/Orbi/Drops-network-every-30-seconds-for-5-seconds/m-p/1505649/highl...

I still keep having period 5-second complete network stalls (all packets dropped) on any 2.1-based version. This is unacceptable, especially when video chatting!

Before FURRYe38 comes in here to say, "have you reset to factory settings yet?", in fact: yes I have, and it doesn't solve the issue. Downgrading to a 2.0-based version fixes it for me though.

However, the downgrade never sticks! My Orbi keeps auto-upgrading periodically, and breaking the reliability of my WiFi.

How do I disable auto-updates? There is another thread about it, but it doesn't work for me. It basically suggests setting all nvram settings that contain the word "up" to 0, but I tried it and my Orbi still upgrades. I tried the following:

orbi_auto_upg=0
auto_check_for_upgrade=0
auto_update=0

Anyone know what I should be configuring to PROPERLY disable updates?

Re: How to disable auto upgrade?

Why cant netgear make this option to turn off and on autoupdate.

so if there is problem in the future we can use older firmware thats working.

Netgear please make this a option to turn off and on auto update

Re: How to disable auto upgrade?

Try blocking FTP port 21 to the IP address of the Orbi Router...

Re: How to disable auto upgrade?

Here's what I did: I replaced /usr/sbin/fw-upgrade with /bin/true. Let's see what that does 🙂

Re: How to disable auto upgrade?

Did you try setting up a block on FTP port 21 to 191.168.1.1?

Also add those URLs to block?

Re: How to disable auto upgrade?

I would if I could, but my Orbi is in AP mode which disables all further configuration and my home router's filtering capabilities are laughable.

So kneecapping the Orbi's ability to upgrade itself seems to be my best bet.

Re: How to disable auto upgrade?

I presume this would or in Router mode. Ya AP mode disable all non required features for AP mode.

Was told it works in router mode.

Let us know if your solution works for you in AP mode.

Re: How to disable auto upgrade?

How about trying to block FTP and those URLs on your main host router?

Ha! That's awesome. Maybe curl to an ITTT applet that Tweets "Thanks, but no thanks." at the netgear account 😉

Re: How to disable auto upgrade?

For people wondering, this totally worked. Haven't been auto-upgraded since.

(I'd still recommend making a backup copy of the original binary though, haven't tried it but it might still be necessary to do manual upgrades)

How about blocking FTP to the IP address of the Orbi while in AP mode on your main host router?
